I was thinking of moving to Florida with my "pit bull". and I was wondering what are the stipulations for the breed in Florida (I am not sure which city I want to move to yet). Any information would be great thanks....

So far we're a sacred state... no BSL here with the exception of one county... Dade County (miami area)

dade county(miami), Flagler county(daytona) and Broward county (boca raton) is the only counties that i know of that have bsl bans and hillsbrough county(tampa) is still debatting, but if ur planin on renting be carefull on what u tell them, i rented a house and all i told my land lord was that i have a mut and hes about 50lbs. which of course is a lie cuz now i have three dogs, one amstaff, one apbt, and one bully...and all are concidered to be "dangerous"

I live in Jax and was recently looking into southern florida - you are safe with Broward - no bans... but don't even step foot in Miami/Dade with your pup!... I got so many emails from people telling me how fast they will fine you and take your dog! I don't think Flagler has a ban either as mentioned above... I have friends who live in St. Augustine and own pits. I might be wrong, but I think Dade county is the ONLY ignorant county in the state of Florida! Pits are probably the most common dog in Jacksonville - they are also the most common found in the ACC and Humane Society here. It is VERY hard to find housing in a nice neighborhood that will allow them, but if you don't mind certain parts of town.... you would have no problems! They are permitted in the dog parks, on the beach, at petsmart, etc... About 2 mos ago, police raided a home with over 100 dogs and all but 10 were put down immediately. It was very sad - and there were alot of protests over it. I think it helped alot of people here learn about the breed and see them for thier good qualities.... and not how the media/society has made them out.
I moved here from CT 9 years ago.... I LOVE Florida!! (ESPECIALLY in the winter!) hahahaha Good luck - let me know if you end up near jax area! Dakota and I can show you around!

As far as I know like everyone said Dade is the only one that has a ban...you dont want to move their anyways....too many drunkin idiots and too much traffic. I live below Miami in the Florida Keys and we dont have any bans....but its a little more expensive down here.
We were coming home from Indiana and we had both the dogs in the car and I was driving his sisters van and David went to go pay for some gas and these 2 guys in homestead (right below miami) kept asking him if he would give them a ride somewhere and he said he couldnt that he had 2 dogs and a car packed full of stuff and the one guy said as long as their not pitbulls and David smiled and said well they are....that guy freaked out and said their illegal in Florida you cant have those...David busted out laughing and said no idiot you cant have them in Miami, I adopted them in Florida so that doesnt make any since....so the guy shut up and left him alone! :-)

SB372 - introduced in the Senate and would allow cities to pass BSL was filed on 12-08-08
Punish the Deed, not the Breed!

MY WIFES FAMILY LIVES IN SANTA ROSA BEACH, THEY CAME TO VISIT FOR HOLIDAYS MY FATHER IN LAW FELL N LOVE WITH MY DESTINEY. HOWEVER HE SAID HE COULD NOT GET ONE BECAUSE NO INSURANCE IN FLORIDA WILL INSURE YOU WITH A PIT BULL IN THE HOME, AND THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYWAY BECAUSE THEY ARE BANNED FROM 90% OF THE STATE. TALLAHASSEE, JACKSONVILLE, CLEARWATER, AND THE DESTIN AREA ARE THE ONLY PLACES HE KNOWS OF FOR SURE THAT ITS NOT ILLEGAL TO OWN. BUT THERE IS STILL THE WHOLE INSURANCE THING.

I live in Jax - and was seriously looking into moving into southern florida. I did alot of research.... posted questions on other forums, got hundreds of emails and made tons of phone calls. Dade county was the only county I found that had a ban. Broward county allows pits - as does the keys. Insurance however IS a problem in Florida in EVERY county - Allstate, State Farm, etc... BIG insurance companies will not provide homeowners insurance if you have a pitbull. I don't own a home, so that wasn't my focus while looking into the move.... but I did find alot of rentals in Broward (Hollywood area) that had no breed restrictions.
