Whats a good time to start training for muscle?

Hey guys just wondering what was the best age for starting to train my dog for weight pulling and to start putting some muscle on him. I know hes a little young now hes 16 weeks and weighs 30 lbs, dad was 110 lbs and very heavy set and I dont want him to be fat. What yah think.

What you can do for now is get a harness and get him used to the feeling of having it on. After that you can start with attaching a jug to the back of the harness with some pebbles (not alot) in it to get it used to noise while he's pulling. You really shouldn't give your growing a dog a real weightpull work out until he's about a year old. If you start him too young it can damage bone growth and developement. Around 5-6 months old you can graduate to a tire or something... IDK OldFortKennels and American_pit are really great people to talk with about getting started in this. There are a few others here as well, but I would suggest you taking advice of members here with more rep points than less... Rep Points are the green bars at the bottom of their picture as well as the silver and orange stars.

Razor is correct... depending on your dog's ancestory is how much muscle you will get out of your dog... Weightpull is a sport that you can participate in with your dog. It takes ALOT more training than just pulling a cart with some weight. The muscle building/defining is more in the conditioning of the dog prior to the weightpull it's self. Many weightpull trainers us treadmills and spring poles and miles of hand walking.

Chino and I walk every day, play fetch every day, and flirt pole every day. For a 5 month old puppy, he is CUT. dont ever over do it tho, their bodies are very gentle

Yep it is alot of work to keep them looking good. I play fetch and now frisbee with Vendetta every day plus she runs. We do flirt pole and agility and flyball three times a week too. I think she looks good.

Your pup is 4mos so I would start taking him for walks every day and work the flirt pole three times a week.

spring pole is always fun for the pups too. but make it a loose spring and make sure its easy for him to grab for now.

Good question, I had to read the thread because I've thought about this also.

I know weightpulling will get the dog ripped, but I've also read that you should wait to engage in the sport 'till the dog is 1 year - 1 1/2 years, due to bone growth and development. (I'm no pro, just going off my reads)

The guy I got my pup from said to start him young though, gradually increasing weight as he gets older...for a 14 week old pit, how much weight is recommended, if any ?

I'd contact Andy (OldFortKennels) to get detailed information about this sport. Him and his dogs are pros!

So the best way to start out is just a lot of hand walking? I don't have a spring pole, will a flirt pole work just as well?

That's what I've been reading, Heart. I'm trying to get word on how to properly construct one, but walks are a great intro to working out.

It benefits you both !

Spring polls are a tug of war kinda thing, a flirt poll is more like a catch and release kinda thing. The flirt makes them run around and jump where the spring has a dog in one place constantly tugging. Lol in a nut shell no they arent the same work out.

hand walking and dragging light weight like a sled or a tire. no more or less from what I've learned here. Andy doesn't make the dogs pull heavy weight ever until a show. It's more about the drive and willingness to please. Just like those beasts of humans who do the weight lifting competitions...they do tons of little reps to get ready for the competition and they only max themselves out durring competition to preserve their bodies.

Andy correct me if I'm wrong here!

Neela's right in the aspect that they're diff. training tools. Sorry, I was reading too fast. I meant to say that I've noticed alot of people implement the flirt pole in the early training stages.

Thanks for clearin' that up, Neela
