Pup on Mill?
Ive heard different opinions, When is a pup old enough to run a carpet mill without causing joint damage? Anybody guess? ..or know for sure?
I been told it is ok so long as they are old enough to go on walks, around 4-5 months, to get short mill sessions 5-10 minutes a day. But then I also read online that you dhould hold off entirely until the dog is mature.
My pup loves to run the mill and is just under six months, I mean LOVES it, is this ok at his age?

A carpet mill is basically just like a human treadmill except without a motor, and the belt is made of carpet so as to not wear down the dogs foot pads, the belt is moved by the dogs running rather than a motor ...if that makes sense.

its a wonderfull way to tire out a pitbull, lol, and if the dog likes to work he will probably love the thing! Great for muscle tone as well.

A carpet mill is used to build muscle and is basically the dog moving at its own speed. A slat mill is a free spining mill that builds cardio and conditioning.

I usually put my puppies on the mill at 3-5 months of age but only for a minute or two. Basically all I am doing is getting them accustomed to the mill and the noises so that later when I do want them to work the mill they are not feaked out!!

Ofk can you use a regualr human tred mill to condition a dog? Is there a certian setup you would need if using a standard human tredmill. I have one and would like to be able to use it with the pups once they get older

I started my guys on the mill around 8 months, but only for a few minutes at a time. At 14 months, they can do 10 minutes, which is plenty. (Shorter for Terra, because I have to bait her, and she ends up sprinting.) I would think you could start them younger, just use caution. Empty them out first and only have them work it for a minute or two.

Not OFK, but yes, you can use a regular e-mill to exercise a dog. (Don't know the benefit of an e-mill on conditioning.) Some people build a box to go around it with sides to keep them on the mill, and a beam across the top for harness attachment. Others just start teaching the dog to walk it without any extra contraptions.

Thanks for the advice ofk and bahamutt, my concern is that he will get on and run until I make him get off, he just keeps going at full speed like the worlds ending and hes only just under six months, I guess I will just let him up when he wants on and just stop him at five minutes once a day.
