I have a question since I'm relatively new to the world of bully owners. From browsing around a few pitbull forums, I have come to see people posting that if your dog does not have papers, it is not a fullblooded or purebred american pitbull terrier. Is this generally agreed upon? Say if someone has a dog that passes to the UKC's American Pitbull terrier standards. If this person does not have the papers, it is not considered an American Pitbull Terrier? I'm just trying to get a little understanding on this.
Technically it could be purebred, but because bull breeds are faced with the massive problem of mislabeling, and so many of the bull breeds can look similar, especially when mixed, we try to avoid calling a dog of unknown lineage a Pit Bull. Mislabeling is a huge contributing factor to BSL, and fuels negative breed image.
I agree with that. So it can be a full blooded or purebred without papers to say it is? Its just that certain dogs are marked as pitbulls when there are multiple similiar breeds?
I mean yeah, purebred dogs aren't suddenly not purebred if the papers are lost or something. But if you've never seen a pedigree for your dog, or one isn't accessible, it's safe to say they are probably mixed. The chance of you getting a purebred APBT from a shelter or from some BYB that "lost the papers" or something is slim to none. The majority of bull breeds that you see are mixed. No ethical breeder is going around breeding their APBT to some random dog of unknown lineage.
I tell people he is a pit mix, I used to tell them he is a Staffy cause I didn't like a reaction to "pit".
