Pit/Patterdale 6 mo pup Fearful...Help?

Hello,

I have a Pitbull Patterdale terrier mix pup that is 6 months. He is great around me, my gf, and our shih tzu with some supervision.

He has always been a bit cautious and shy. Took me about 1 month to get him to respond to leash walking. But ive noticed that he is rather fearful and hesitant. His emotions are all in the eyes. Anyhow, he does bark and show aggression towards us when I pick him up face to face, or attempt to cut his nails and when taking his ear crop tape off.

When around strangers, he is shy and is always looking to run in flight. When they get close, he yelps and snarls attempting to bite. I've noticed he does similar things around other dogs of all types. He is shy and tucks his tail. After some time though, I notice he opens up, and acts friendly towards them with some curiosity. A lot of times though, when around bigger dogs, or more typically aggressive breeds, he starts to snarl and growl.

What can I do to bring him out more? I'd like to instill some trust and confidence before I get him hunting and attempt bite/protection work. Thanks.

its a growing experience for you and your pup. the best thing i can tell you is to take your dog out and make sure that he is use to a bunch of different sounds. Traffic, bushes, rocks, trails other dogs. Basically eveything that you and your dog will ever be around.

when your dog comes into contact with other people do they come up to him or does he just see them and automatically take off? I am no expert in the department but what might help is just for you to walk around people and just let them know not to try and force a greeting. if your dog wants to say hi then he will. But if strangers approach and they try to pet him his reaction might just be to tell them to F-off. Thats how some dogs are.

I am sure sooner or later that he will get use to people. Lisa from performance maybe able to help you out with this one a bit more.
