Bully breed and dog parks

I have an 8 month old american pitbull, Tuck, who loves going to the park to play with my friends dogs. I grew up with pits who got along but would get in spats every once in a while but nothing to serious. Lately, i have been noticing the same tendency in Tuck he plays well but gets in small spats from time to time no bodily injury ever occurring and almost never started by him. Today however a pit bull mix lunged at him while playing chase with other dogs and it escalated quickly resulting in a small puncture on the neck of Tuck, no stitches needed. A dog walker yelled at me and told me to muzzle him, i believe she over reacted on us because he is a pitbull and i am covered in tattoos. Here is my question should i be avoiding the dog parks or be putting a muzzle on him? He does not go out of his way to fight but he will not back down any suggestions.

definately stay away... let him play with your friends dogs for a while in your guys back yards, but APBTs are dog agressive once they even start having those tendancies i remove them from the situation. constant supervision is needed around other dogs. No muzzle needed you just need to be smart... NEVER have your dog in public without a leash... because all it takes is the one jerk that has the pomerainian that goes after your pitbull first and the pomerainian is lunch to your dog... You're stuck explaining "well it went after my dog first" while it's sitting right before your pups paws... you just went through this... doesn't matter if your dog started it or not... the public sees "a pitbull mauled a pomerianian today and the local dog park" you're right cane there are exceptions to every rule... but would you like that liability on your door step?

I would avoid off leash dog parks, and its a thing called Testosterone it should start kicking in anywhere inbetween 8 to 12 months of age. and even though he does not start it more than likely he will end it

Thank you everyone for the quick reply, Tuck will not be going back to the dog park as you all said he may not start it but he will finish it.

IMO and thats all it is (dont want to offend anyone) BUT this is not the breed for dog parks or taking to Petsmart. MOST APBT are somewhat DA and with the rep they have, compiled with the IGNORANT PUBLIC, when your dog goes off on another dog, you have a MAN KILLER. You could be minding your OWN BUSINESS and they could walk up with their dog, it begins to growl and bark and when your APBT returns the same actions, you are now viewed by everyone in the park or store as guilty of owning a sadistic, viscious dog!

Its a shame but it is what it is.

Not saying this is the case for all APBT but a larger amount than not.

Bailey is the only one we could take anywhere and feel rather confident it would be ok.

I take my pit to the parks. Mainly to show people how non-agressive they can be. I have seen at least a dozen other pits that are there, and have never caused a problem.

Tons of dogs will growl and bark at others including at my pit, but she just wags her tail and continues to try and play. She usually tries to play with the bigger dogs, but when those tiny dogs get all huffy, she just thinks thats an invite to try and play.

She has been a great display of how most of these dogs behave.

Its usually me telling other owners if their dog is going to growl and bark at all the other dogs, maybe they shouldnt bring them.

I wish I could take Maggie to a dog park or something (we dont have them down here) but when we were on our trip to Indiana, we would stop at rest stops for Maggie to go potty and if there was a dog she wanted to investigate and alot of them were small dogs and Maggie doesnt like small dogs! lol So we would have to drag her or carry her away from the crowd to an area by herself. it sucked because I want Maggie to play with other dogs but I have no volunteers.

Derek79 how old is your dog? because thats how Tuck was he started off being the picture perfect dog at the park, comes when i call didn't get involved in other fights but when other dogs would begin to show signs of aggression he would think its an invitation to play not a warning sign. After what happened yesterday i will allow him only to play with dogs we know and in an environment that is more controllable.

I take my pup too the off leash park. Mind you he is always on his leash. Reason being is he loves to play and hes a bit rough and he needs more obedience training. Soo its more for a socialization thing. Soo far he has been attacked by an full grown husky and an adult standard poodle. Mine was on a leash obviously these owners were not managing there dogs well enuff. I do understand B.J. is still young and i am ever vidulant of any slight behavioral changes towards other dogs.. soo far hes not DA..... YET...

the rough playing is the start of DA. I would watch him for now, but after 7months of age i would quit taking him there.
