hey what happened to your story?!
But I met my first pit bull type dog when I was 11 my mom brought home a little red nose puppy. He was awesome and when I couldn't play with my friends he was always down to play with me. he even came to my school a couple times. and he chased off other dogs lol. I learned a lot from Benjamin (that was his name). I learned to never trust a pit bull not to fight and I also learned to never trust a human not to be cruel. One night my brother let him out to use the bathroom and while he was out someone came and stabbed him multiple times. That was a horrible night and he died but we learned a valuable lesson. Never ever leave your dog unsupervised.
I still don't think I've ever met a real American pit bull Terrier. Everyone where I live is into bullies and what not. Most don't even know there is a difference in the bully breeds. I'm still waiting to actually meet my first American pit bull Terrier in person. I think the average person is.

my first babysitter my single mom could trust outside my grandmother and great grand was her best friends pull dog Stroker Ace a Big Head X Whopper bloodline mixed dog from the 80s pullin hay days.

years later I was looking for the ultimate family dog while being in wolf rescue and vet tech at the SPCA.. A dog sired by a CH pit dog found me out of the litter I got to choose from. By the time Hooch was 6months I had the fever and by the time he was a year and a half I had retired completely from wolves. I miss my wolves and I still have bulldog fever. These dogs are like no other canine alive; rather none like them.. All American All purpose go to dog.

We had one when we lived in Alabama back in the 80's. 87 to be exact. When we moved out here we had to leave her behind because she was pregnant and due any day. There was no way to take her in her condition and the fact that I was also pregnant at the time and we were traveling cross-country with a hyperactive 3-year old too. Loved that dog. She would let my son (the 3 year old at the time) just lay all over her and not mind it a bit. She would follow the kids around where ever they went like their little protector. We never had a problem with her being DA or HA.

Then a few years ago my son (the now grown up 3 year old) met Holly and I got to meet Stack in the middle of the night in my apartment kitchen. When Holly had her litter of pups I just fell in love with the breed all over again. What really upsets me is the changes that have happened with the publics' perception of these dogs. When I had ours back in the 80's you didn't hear all this negative stuff you are hearing now. That was left to the Rotties and Dobies.

About 7 years ago I met a guy and we started dating. He had an AmStaff. No papers but that's what she was and I believe it. The breeder sold her to his dad and then stole her back! In the end my ex stole her from the retarded breeder and moved to CA. That's why she had no papers. He was crazy but that's why he's an ex. Lol. Anywho, I lived with Skylar for quite some time. Prior to this I couldn't tell a pit bull from a hole in the wall, so I started reading. All novice beliefs, like how AmStaff and APBT are the same breed and just other stuff like that. But long story short, I fell more in love with her than the guy!

She was 7ish at that time and has since moved onto the rainbow bridge. But if I had never met that sweet lil fatty I would have never dreamed of having one of my own. And now Odin has the same goofy, strong, loyal, lovable, cuddly personality I fell in love with! He is my best friend!

Saw my first one as a little kid, and it is one of my most vivid memories. One of the construction men brought him and he was just gorgeous. Fawn with a red nose, Natural Rose ears and he looked to be about 40-45 lbs. My Mom told me to stay away from him and that Pit Bulls were dangerous, I believed her since I was just a little kid.

I became what I call a Closet Bulldog fancier. I wanted nothing to do with "Pit Bulls", because of what my Parents told me, but I loved similar breeds such as SBTs.

Years later, I found out about BSL. I thought "Well, that isn't right. Even if I don't like Pit Bulls." I did more research and made up my mind that APBTs were not bad dogs. I knew absolutely nothing about the breed, and I was the biggest Bleeding Heart Animal lover out there. I eventually found out about Game Dogs. At first, I was outraged that anyone would even think of fighting dogs and I started arguing with someone online. As I got more material to argue with, I actually became interested in Game Dogs and did a crapload of research. I spent hours reading up on famous dogs, bloodlines, Dogmen, etc.

And here I am today.

I fell in love with Amstaffs 25 years ago, when I was working as an apprentice to a professional handler. She had a friend who bred Amstaffs that we would run into at the shows. It was love at first sight.

When I retired from showing jumping horses after several injuries, I used the money from selling my horses to found my Amstaff breeding program.

I wish I had been a little better informed about the DA and the fact that they tear apart anything nice you try to give them in their kennels and crates though. I have a few than can take apart a $160 Dogloo in minutes, and forget buying any of them beds for their crates or houses... It's kind of depressing seeing all of the booths full of toys and beds at dog shows and not being able to shop...

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this forum, but I couldn't resist posting on this thread!! In the beginning, I was the one who was terrified of the breed, believed every horror story I heard and was in panic mode when my neighbor brought two pits home and placed them in their back yard (at which we don't have privacy fences, so my fear was that they would get out of their condensed cage and go for blood)
What changed my mind and helped me fall deeply in love with the breed?!?! I met a responsible owner whose dogs were nothing like the stereotype. His dogs were loving, although they did look scary, they were perhaps the best we'll behaved loving dogs I had seen. I began to question myself and started researching them until finally I took one. . Then another one home . . Then another one home. My children love them and they love my children.
So for me it was a responsible breeder/owner who helped me fall in love with the breed. If you were to meet me now you would never know I was fearful in the past!

As a young boy in the mid 70's my father brought home a 2 year old blk/wht male Ch fighting dog confiscated from a fighting ring. (In those days the authorities did not put the dogs down just because they where fought.) He was the most intimidating dog I had ever seen. He was one of the smartest dogs I have ever meet even till this day. He would only bark when it was warranted, tore up nothing, loved children, very loyal, and could make decisions as to when to be agressive or not. He was friendly to small dogs, and or female dogs, but would not tolerate male aggressive dogs. He seemed to hate cats, but one day when he was about 5 years, we came home and there was a stray large tom cat sleeping with him. That tom cat ended up being his best friend until they grew old together and died of old age. I have had many apbt's, and am still searching for one like him. I may have one now, but is still to young to tell yet, keeping my fingers crossed :-). Bottom line is, I have been around this breed before most of the population knew they existed, and have never had any negative experiences with them.
Have only owned true game bred strains, and only 1 grew to be HA before she was put down. I know I am going to offend some with what I am about to say. But I am not a fan of mixing this breed with any other breed, or even mixing some strains within the breed. It took hundreds of years to perfect this breed, and irresponsible breeding has caused most of the people mean dogs that we see today. Look at the old photos of the apbt of the late 1800's and the early 1900's, they where almost always posing with people and/or children, why do you think they where called "nanny dog's"?
LOL, Ok I will stop now.

Grew up around these animals, to make a long story that no one cares about short, by the time i was old enough to really begin to comprehend what these animals were and offered, I "fell in love" with the genetics behind such an animal and all abilities that followed. The uncanny abilities and pathway of such superior world class hounds, the trail and the puzzles are what really took me in the most.

I remember clear as day the first time i truly encountered drive, a fully functional dare i say machine, a tough dog with a big heart. I was around 11, the gentlemen of whom i was at their house (friends of my mom) were having coffee in the common room as i had managed to find myself walking outside to take a closer look. The man had gotten up and walked outside not in fear of what would happen to me but floored that here this kid is walking straight up to one of his prize possessions, not caring about the hard hitting mouthy dog barking and tail goin' walking straight up to pet the dog. If i remember correctly, i ended up taking a nap with the dog the same day. What most found "threatening" as the misunderstanding of what drive and aggression is, how it presents, etc.. I found even at such a young age interesting and i'd guess to some degree comforting. I think that was a real turning point in knowing what i wanted to feed and be involved in later years.

As a kid,my neighbor had 6 pits,I grew up to love those dogs, but then my brother started spending time at one of my neighbors houses,he owned 2 pits that everyday when I would walk by they were being exercised(spring pole, carpet mill, weight pulling etc..)I was kinda scared and nervous around those dogs, except for my neighbors pits,I had never really met any others, then one day a few years ago,my family was having a BBQ,and my brother shows up with this 1 year old muscular dog,my little 4 year old cousins ran up to this huge pit and started pulling on his ears and petting him,now that big dog is my best friend, after we got him,I started researching the breed, found out about BSL and game dogs and dog men,I was amazed by the strength, loyalty, determination, companionship of this amazing breed. It is unlike any other.
