Hello I am new here and have a situation
Hello!
I found this forum looking for some help and advice.
This is what happened and is going on- about a month ago a pit showed up in the neighbors driveway (one which has never been seen around here before) most likely dumped. After narrow misses from two separate cars, a neighbor called animal control BUT they do not adopt out pits, they get put down. So I stepped in, removed her from the neighborhood, got her vaccinated, flea treated and microchipped. I convinced my parents to kind of foster her and it was going so well it looked as if she found a home. Dog loves their dog, cat and basically every human of every age! That's all in a week span this happened...
So my dad assumed the dog was over doing the food and getting chubby, my mother did not agree and called me over. It was very obvious in not seeing the dog for two days it wasn't over eating, she blew up like a ballon!! Next day at the vet, she was confirmed pregnant and the X-ray showed 4-5 pups due in 7-14 days. I had begun trying to locate homes beforehand until she had the pups, and it was NOT 4-5 but 10!!!
Now that you know the history, please do not think the breeding was intentional or byb situation. Mom dog is healthy and visiting the vet regularly and we already have plans for the pups. The vet already prescribed the wormer the mom and pups will get at two week intervals and they will be vaccinated as well.
I need to learn what's best and what I can do, I've done hours of online research over the past few weeks but knowledge from people who know more is very beneficial!!!!
Is there a best way to look for homes? How much do you ask price wise for what we have done and will be done? How to look at potential adopters and know they have good intentions? Is there anyway to tell if the pups are pure?
I was thinking a DNA sample but unsure of pricing if its even worth it?
As of right now the pups are two weeks, so no definite signs yet I know of. They do however have a minimum of 80-90% bully and do match identical newborn pit pictures I've found online. Colors are blue, seal, and black, mostly solid but some have white marking like toes, blaze, chin and chest. Moms black with white blaze and feet. I think with how prevalent pits are around here, very high likely hood they are pure.

welcome to gp.. there is no way to know they are pure.. there are WAY too many breeds that resemble these.. besides that what do you think they look like?? am bullies, apbts, staffies?? im not really sure what youve been researching but you cant go off looks on anything that has to do with breed or blood.. im sure you have good intentions but these pups should not be sold as anything but mutts.. youre not even sure if the mom was purebred.. good luck finding homes

Well for starters you have no idea how much of any breed they have, as no one can tell a breed or percentage of a breed in a dog by looks. They are just mix bred puppies like every other randomly bred dog ( I understand that you didn't cause this.) There are no DNA test that tell the breeds of dog. DNA testing can only identify already documented parents. Many breeds look the same as newborns.... Since the mother was out loose running around I highly doubt they are pure. "Pits" being common doesn't mean any of those dogs are of an actual breed, and I even more highly doubt they are American Pit Bull Terriers.
As for the puppies, get them altered before they go to homes and as far as what to charge, well you be lucky to find them good permanent homes, much less people that want to pay for them.
Hate to be such a joy kill, but homing even possibly mixed puppies of this type is hard to do. Even well bred dogs for free have problems finding permanent homes that can handle an active and powerful breed. Hundreds of situations just like this happen all the time which is why "pits" are so common everywhere. you need to be prepared to possibly take a puppy back when it is older and people don't want to deal with it any more. You can interview people and use your best judgment, but you just never can tell about people.

I will try to post pics, and maybe I can get some input on that too I will totally admit I'm not the best identifying breeds especially bullies now that there are so many and new crosses.

GREAT JOB ...
Most likely it was someones dog that got knocked up by their other dog and then got out while in the tail end of her heat.. variables are endless really~
As said above no way to tell for sure.. I would just adopt them out threw your vet office advertisement board. That way vet minded people would adopt them and bring them back to that vet to get spayed or neutered. The whole litter needs to be sterilized in this way. Happens alot no worries; doing a bang up job, just knock it on out of the park.
If you have to put them in the paper as curs and let it be known its an APBT cross of unkown origins. 50- 100 each because everyone takes care of stuff they spend money on vs what they get for free.
Best of wishes~

Check around with your local shelters and rescue groups and see if they have any programs going for free (or reduced) spay/neuter. Get the pups done before you sell or give them away. The downsides of pediatric spay/neuter are far outweighed by putting 10 MORE mixed breed puppy machines out there, good intentions or not. Where are you located at?

^^^^ just grab spay and neuter certificates from shelters and such that give you a 30dollar spay/neuter; if you can get these and fill them out like contracts most people can afford 30-50 dollars over 120+ any day... Spay and Neuter clinics are available in many areas as well and they offer such as I mentioned usually..
Don't pay for pediatric spay and neuters, for some vets its cheaper and easier others charge just as much.. food for thought... there are more veterinarian millionaires in the USA than any other job profession.

Finding homes-put up an ad at the vet, local paper, whichever, you are going to have to heavily screen no matter what, lots of people will take a pit/mix puppy, most are going to turn around and dump it 4-6 months later and three homes later it will be PTS at a shelter. Your best bet is get them fixed and microchipped before going anywhere, if you go to PBRC.net they have info and help on that and also info on finding homes, might have a contract as well. Breed, just say probably pit mix, there's no way to tell and mom could have mated with several dogs.
You want people that either have breed experience or knowledge, vet references, people that hang onto their animals and can prove it, homeowners better than renters unless they've been there forever, make sure they have insurance that covers pit bulls, it may be several months before you can get these pups homes, is there a rescue around that can help crosspost and screen?

Always charge for any dog you home. Always put that you screen possible owners to root out the good from bad homes. And always check home situations. Looks like you are on the right track with what you are doing.

Ask for vet references from any potential adopter for the pups!

To me she looks like she has some boxer?? None the less, they are still cute puppies and you probably wont have a terrible time finding homes. But since the breed is unknown it might be tough. In my opinion, I wouldnt pay anything more then S/N costs.
