Pet owners...

I keep seeing posts that are driving me nuts!! Why do people get pets if they don't intend on taking care of them? It just baffles me. I see posts on here, Facebook, text messages. It just irks me that a person can just toss aside an animal so easily. I would love to open a rescue in the future. I'm retired by marriage so I would love to devote my time to these unwanted pets and find them GOOD FOREVER homes! I understand having to rehome a pet for circumstances beyond your control but to me it's your RESPONSIBILITY as the pets owner to send them with somebody that will treat them as well or better than you would. Not just take them down the long dirt road in Middle of nowhere to that farm that your sure will take in ANOTHER stray.

it makes me so sad! I've spent the last couple years preparing to breed Aussies and now I'm sick to think about where the poor puppies will end up. Not everybody loves animals the way I do.

You know what, it used to drive me nuts, too. But it doesn't get to me anymore. People have their own priorities, and the first thing you have to realize is that not everyone is like you or me. Not everyone values their dogs like we do, and some value animals in general very little. Some people are just selfish jerkoffs. That is just how it is, and how it will always be.

You are going to breed, but are worried where the pups will end up. That is tough, but you just do your best to screen homes. Do not let those pups leave before you have them micro-chipped and registered to you. This way if they ever end up in a shelter, it will trace back to you. Make it very clear to the buyers that you will take back the puppy at any time, ever, for any reason, and that you may even buy them back. By and large, dogs from responsible quality breeders do not end up in shelters.

Getting into rescue, I would advise that you try your best to operate on logic-based principles as a business would, and not by emotion. The intent to 'save them all' can lead you down a road of stress, problems, and heartbreak. You sound like a good person, just don't get too far in over what you can handle. It's tough!

Thank you. I appreciated the post. I think it's hard not to get sucked in to the black hole of unwanted or abused pets. There are so many. I see these people posting their animals on Craigslist all the time now with "has to go tonight or will be pts" or "my husband says come get this cat or he will shoot it tomorrow" WHAT THE HELL? It drives me nuts. I have to refrain from calling them all and telling them how awful they are. That animal didn't choose to be here but you did choose to take it into your home so now it is your responsibility. Are you going to kill all of your responsibilities? God I hope you never have children. It's hard. It's hard to see neighbors that abuse the animals they have. It's hard t see the people that think puppy's are amazing so as soon as they turn into a dog they go. It's hard to see the commercials for the dogs in kill shelters. I have a huge heart. I get taken advantage a lot but I feel like if I take the dog in I give them the best I can whether they are my choice of pet or not and a lot of times these strays will love you unconditionally for what you do. As is I have 9/10 dogs. I say that because I feed one of the neighbors dogs. They don't want him but also don't want me to have him so I put food out and don't touch him. I picked 2 of these dogs purposefully. The 2 Aussies. My husband bought me 2 dogs for "presents" (men lol) and the rest are stray dogs. We go through a ton of dog food and I have them all on monthly trifexis (even the neighbors dog) they all go to the vet when needed and for shots. It costs me an arm and a leg but I love these dogs they are part of our family.

It doesn't help that my vet will call me whenever she finds a stray also to see if i know anybody that would want it or if I would take it lol. I think at first my vet thought I was a hoarder. It took her a couple years to get to know me and now when I call she always ask if I've adopted any new ones or found anybody homes. It's always good to have a vet that can give you good references.

I think what we dog lovers have to realize is that we're not going to change the world just by taking in dogs. Education is key (that's why I love this site). I use to be a dummy when it came to dogs. I had a human aggressive pit bull type dog that had a litter of puppies. I didn't sell them, but they were homed and now that I know better I can educate folks who are who I used to be. Those people that don't realize the problem can come to see it through education. I came from a culture where dogs were treated differently than I treat them now and I see it now but it didn't come from going to a shelter (as bad as that sounds) it came from me seeking knowledge and educating myself. Others that see the problem and don't care are in a whole different area of the spectrum though.

Oh trust me I know! I've taken in so many dogs its not funny but I try Everytime I get one to its forever hOme to talk to them about responsible pet ownership. EVERY SINGLE TIME I tell them no matter what I will take that dog back if you get in a situation where you can't keep it and I always try to stay in contact every couple of months to make sure both parties are still happy. I grew up moving around a lot and always having to hand my pets over. I didn't have a great childhood. There was a lot of abuse and drug use and I think I really clung to animals for friends and family instead of people. I would read to escape from my situation a lot so I've read tons of books on animals. I constantly try to educate myself. That's why I joined this page in the first place. I think I got off on the wrong foot with a few people on here. I'm trying to learn sometimes its just hard to change views that you've had for years. I try to educate people sometimes on the things I do know about it but one thing I've learned is some people just don't care to learn at all.

I know what you mean. but hey dont worry about which foot you got off on you're here to learn and the fact that you're still around says something. Its awesome that you rescue.

To me pets are family no matter what. I have pets and I treat them as well as any family member. This is there house, they are allowed to do as they wish with the exception of ruining it. I take them to the vet when they need to go, they get fresh food and water daily, they basically live like kings and queens. It irks me that some do not know how to take care of their pets and if they can not then they should not have them.

My dogs are my children. Would people get rid of their own kids?!!! This upsets me too. I hate seeing dogs in shelters because their owners moved or didn't want them anymore. If I had to move, I would go out of my way to ensure my dog coming with me.
