Leash Laws R 4 EVERYONE

Zeus and I were visiting a friend of mine we visit often yesterday, I took him out to go "potty" when the neighbor across the streets ankle bitter, think he might be a Jack Russel Terrier, attacked him. Now this isn't the first time he's done it, but before I could stomp my foot at him and he'd run away. Yesterday he jumped on Zeus' back and attacked him I got him away from him without a reaction from Zeus but instead of him yapping at us from across the street like he has done before he continued to attack my dog. So I had to pick my 50 lb dog up and carry him 5 blocks down the street. While a 10 lb dog running loose fallowed me barking, jumping and running circles around my ankles up to my friends drive. When I got to the drive the neighbor called him, and she looked really amused at the sight of me carrying a Pit-bull to protect it from her little dog who didn't go to her til I got to the door.I was p*ssed. I was protecting my dog cause I know that even though he was on his leash and attacked by a loose dog if Zeus bit the dog it would be the BIG BAD PIT-BULLS fault.I WONT take the chance on him having an altercation and do what ever is necessary to prevent one but don't appreciate being laughed at by someone who obviously don't care about protecting hers from other dogs or cars.I was so ANGRY that I couldn't say anything to her my friend said I should tell her there's a leash law for ALL dogs.I figured she obviously is not a real mature individual and if I said anything to her she probably would have something ignorant to say and I wasn't in the mood to deal with stupidity. I know it's gonna happen again sometime in the future and I would like some advice on how to try to prevent it without calling the law or causing any problems with my friends neighbor.

Happens To me all the time. I also pick my boy up with ankle biters but not with big dogs I don't want to Get my balance off. The key is to do what you did, but right then in the moment don't get pissed. Dont say a word, just get out of the situation. Your dog can pick up on your tone just as much as the neighbor and you need to stay calm. I always debate what happened. If its one I'm going to encounter again, like a neighbor or neighbor of a place we frequent, I put my dog in the house or car and take some breaths and then go talk to them. Your dog is a lot better than mine would be it seems. Mine has no tolerance for any off leash dog He doesnt know. (Worst are the off leash owners who scream at me while their dog is aggressively running at us "he is friendly don't worry" as I reply "theleash law applies to friendly dogs too!!" But I go knock on their door and explain that I want to keep all dogs safe and that I can't have your dog off leash for its and my own dogs safety. I take it from there and usually it ends very well. I have only had someone I took time to go and explain my fears ignore my plea once. I'm lucky, I know. But I live in a city that doesn't tolerate off Leash dogs and I don't hesitate to call Animal Control if I have spoken to them and they ignore the seriousness of my request. I don't have time to spare feelings when its potentially my dogs life on the line.

I live in the country and I have one dog who is DA and very protect full of "her puppy" (she's fine with Cain just mainly other female dogs). And both of mine are ALWAYS leashed and stay in my yard. Neighborhood dogs unfortunately are run wherever they please dogs. Most of my neighbors keep theirs out of our yard and in their own but we have one go disregards and doesn't care. And having a bully baby and another da dog to their two females isn't great. Honestly, we keep a little air soft gun and shoot close to them-never hits the dog- and if I forget the air soft gun I immediately grab my dogs when I see the others and take them to the door. But like stated, talking to the neighbor once your calm is the best bet. Most will listen.

Gravel seems to work well for me. Unlike a single rock, which can also really hurt a dog, if I use a handful of gravel I don't miss. It's like an innocuous shotgun.

The air gun on the other hand, that's my Mom's preferred method. I don't think she cares about them scrapping with her pit as much as she hates cleaning up the waste of another person's dog... the funny part being that she almost encourages her dog to wander across the property to a neighbor's place to defecate.

Thanks for the advice were home now and probably wont visit again for a couple of weeks.Next time we do I'll go across the street and talk to her before I take him for a walk.Hopefully if she knows we are there she'll tie him out instead of turning him loose.I know I shouldn't get angry and wouldn't have if she wouldn't have found it so amusing. My boy is pretty social and will greet calmly as long as they do the same I'm pretty lucky! With a few exceptions the one I told you about and a loose Pit-bull that attacked him outside my Ex's house 3 years ago which TERRIFIED me and is something I NEVER want to experience again we haven't had to meet off leash dogs.We live in the middle of nowhere and our closest neighbor is 8 miles away and I'm real careful about the parks and public places we go.After the one incident with the other Pit who was twice the size of Zeus I was apprehensive of taking him around other dogs he was never confrontational if we met a dog who clearly wasn't interested in being nice he didn't hesitate to get out of his way.I really didn't believe he had a chance when that dog grabbed him but he proved me wrong. After that everyone told me I couldn't trust him around other dogs because once they get a taste of blood and a feel for fighting that's all he'll do.Once again he proved them wrong. To this day he has never provoked a fight and enjoys meeting and playing with a variety of other dogs,he isn't to hot on my friends 115 lb Monster dog who plays by jumping and trampling him when he's had enough he'll retreat to me and we'll either leave or she'll crate him.I know what he's capable of and NEVER tell anyone he wont fight or believe he wont like I said I NEVER want to experience that again.I do trust him in a controlled situation to meet and play with other dogs as long as I'm with him.We are real close and I read him as good as he reads me.I'm PROUD of him and wish that all dogs owners would fallow the laws and be responsible owners so I could safely take my boy anywhere!

Sounds like you got the right Idea Shelby-N-Zeus, I hate when people say once they get the taste of blood blah blah blah. I have to relax when that pops up too lol get more done. I have not bought this, but I know a friend who swears by it on walks. It basically startles the dog so they stop i their tracks which gives you time more time to react. Not sure if it would work on all dogs all situations, but one more tool in the belt is never a bad thing I figure!

Oh wow I'm really sorry you have to deal with things like this. I'd be pretty mad too if someone allowed their dog to do that and then laugh like its funny. I know this is gunna sound really mean but if that was me I would have punted that little dog back to his yard like a football. I'm not very big and my dog is huge so I can't pick him up at all. And being he is DA he'd tear a little dog up if it tried to attack. Better to kick it away then have it get killed by my dog cause people can't obey leash laws. This is why I always carry bear mase and I'm not afraid to use it, in fact I had to spray a loose dog at the park before. Shoot Ryan sprayed one in the front yard too. I just will not risk my dog being taken away because some dumb ass can't control their dog and they would take him too. They will always blame the pit bull. Doesn't matter if your dog is on leash and the other is breaking the law we are deemed guilty just for owning the breed which means we must always be extra careful. I think talking to her first will be great and hopefully she is courteous enough to keep her ankle bitter inside. That's the biggest problem I have with the little dog owners in my neighborhood, they think because the dog is small it can't cause any damage so it's ok to just let them roam free.

This happens almost everyday I take my dogs for a walk on the beach. Yesterday, a female Black Lab whose owners were more than 30 yards away, came up to my yearling female "bulldog" and they sniffed each other and all seemed nice until we started to walk away and the female came in front of us and tried to attack my dog! Well, my dog is a mirror if the dog wants to play, she plays, if the dog wants to be submissive, she's gentle, if the dog wants to start a fight, well she WILL fight back. Luckily all it took was me yelling "HEY!!!!!!!!!!" at the dogs and the female tucked her tail and backed off. Then, the owners finally called her. That's pretty lame.

The Pet Convincer looks like something worth trying it's humane and affordable. Thanks for telling me about itFigure I better wait til I figure my finances out before I order got a little carried away with the "Black Friday"sales, got some good deals though.I'll probably put it on Zeus Christmas list and order it next week and I'll let you know what we think about it.Don't expect to have to use it on him but if the ankle bitter comes back around well see how he likes it lol. Believe me I thought about giving the little guy the boot but I had the situation under control without any injuries lol so I just ignored him the only way I could bring myself to hurt him was if he would have bit me!I would have loved to put a foot up her #$$ though lol. If I wasn't able to carry him I like you would've sent him flying! It's absolutely true that no matter how law abiding and responsible we our it's always our dogs and us that get the blame. So I'm DEFINITELY gonna take your advice, try the Pet Convicer out cause I prefer the humane methods but in case it don't work I'm gonna carry a back up can of pepper spray! So if we run into a loose BIG DOG that I won't be able to protect Zeus by carrying him away from I can protect him! Thanks for all the info!

I know it stinksthat were the only one's expected to fallow the law,and the ones who get the BLAME when there's a altercation started by a loose dog.I keep Zeus away from a park I use to enjoy jogging my Chow Duke through, cause I know there's joggers whose dogs are running 10-15 miles ahead of them loose. It's not fair were forced to avoid public places because of irresponsible owners who like the Lab owner, believe there dog is not capable of starting a fight and because there 30ft away will never believe it was the aggressor.

I agree! Cain doesn't get around many other dogs and we keep him from our neighborhood dogs due to the fact that most of them are mean and in case anything were to happen. The only time he goes in a public place is to be weighed at petsmart or vet. And even then I have people with their hyper active dogs pulling toward us when they see him and Cain tucking his tail with hair up obviously not ok. The worst is when the other owners say oh he just wants to say hi! No. My dog does not want to say hi to your ankle biter!

Hope when you get the new Thing it helps you out with them. I never thought of carrying bear mace like mentioned. Might need to try that!
