a thought re BSL VS muzzles
I was just perusing an Irish pit bull forum.... In Ireland (or at least that part) pit bulls and maybe even Staffords are required to be MUZZLED. AS much as I HATE seeing those pix of lovely dogs in a lovely park IN MUZZLES, I had the thought..... instead of total bans and BSL, would it work to require muzzles instead in America in place of BSL where BSL is going to be passed anyway? I hate the image but at least they are not banned,.... Thoughts?

Muzzling is part of BSL. There's different levels of BSL. Total Ban and Certain Requirements (Muzzles). Lots of places already require "Pit Bulls" to be muzzled as a part of BSL.

Yea I know where I used to live with my parents they were total banned. Where I am now they are not.
There is a town I think an hour or so away that requires reinforced enclosure or something and certain gate procedures etc and another one a couple hr away that requires muzzles.

NO.. muzzle when you need to be responsible as a dog owner if you know you have a hot dog and your walking it public. AS FAR AS BSL.. Well Germany started out with similar laws Then they would taunt the dogs and put the dogs in a truck surrounded by angry police dogs and if the "pit bull" acted aggressively they were taken and put down.
It started just like like .. muzzling.. and heres how it plays out in the U.S. of A..

CA has a law in place protecting dogs from BSL however a county can enact a mandatory spay and neuter law instead. but it usually doesnt affect just "pit bulls" (im pretty sure) . .. but even the spay neuter laws are silly. it does nothing to decrease dog attacks. it might keep some BYBs from over breeding but the serious ones dont pay attention to laws anyways.
i want to read the actual law though now.. i gotta go find it.

That Sikeston thing is pissing me off!!!!!!
Thanks for you thoughts... obviously NO BSL is what we want - but I guess I was thinking if we could not sway the irrational policy makers that this would be a compromise. Owner responsibility should be #1 and the 'pit bull' should not be singled out but it is a hard road convincing the uninitiated.... I suppose we should risk more all out bans as we reject other short cuts/solutions like the muzzle idea while working to educate about the inefficacy of ' BSL' and turning the focus onto the owners and their role in any dog incidents.... What a stupid, slipper slope that hangs on stupid people making stupid decisions like allowing their dogs to run free or get loose to potentially cause trouble that ends up screwing the rest of us...

muzzling is BSL , to hell is someone thinks Im muzzling my FRIENDLY dogs when stupid yappy nippy poodles and doxies and other dogs are walking around without them on. I can see muzzling a dog if needed for the dog or publics safety but my dogs do not NEED one.

Exactly. Never once have I met a vicious "pit bull" type dog while it was leash walking with it's owner. Not once. I can't count how many times I've seen little fluff balls nipping at people while on a leash with their owners. It's ridiculous. So I'll be damned if my well behaved dogs are getting muzzled. Muzzling is not compromising it's rolling over.

I read somewhere a long time ago that in another country -- don't you love how specific I am? -- dogs are allowed to ride the bus and the subway if they are muzzled. All dogs. That, IMO, makes a little bit of sense, to allow additional privileges in exchange for a muzzle. But I would not muzzle my dogs without a fight. I had to buy a muzzle for Loki when she was a puppy, which she was supposed to wear while we were walking. My answer to that was only to take her out at night, and since we lived right at the edge of the area, at least part of our walk was in the neighboring town. (I know that technically I set a bad example, but I have a big issue with muzzling my dogs.)
