Hello folks wasn't sure where to put this so placed it here so mods can move it if they see fit.
So been wanting an apbt for a long time and living in Alberta it's not an issue but the wife and I are moving to Australia in a few years and under bsl the apbt is banned though in investigating bsl there it doesnt make much sense says there banned but there is restrictions for those that have them such as have to be muzzled, confined from the public, notify local city of ownership and if the dog moves to another owner or dies etc so I do not understand this are they banned or restricted ????

Now another question is they have a list of the banned breeds the usual suspects but the amstaff is not banned ??? So was wondering is the American Bully banned ? As being on here come to learn the American bully is registered a seperate breed from the APBT and no mention of them on the list of banned breeds ?

As reason for this post is to gather info as obviously do not wish to purchase a pup and then told we can't keep it.

Jealous you're moving there! I spent a month there. Absolutely loved it!

You could always see about getting an email of someone you could be able to talk to. When I was there I didn't see ANY. But it could have been where I was. I would find a way to get in contact with someone there and find out.

Also, I would assume if an AmBully isn't on the list, then it's legal. But again you can always see about getting touch with someone over there and finding out.

Thanks, its something i have wanted to do since i was very young was to live there i have family that live there and really cant wait lol.

i've contacted a few organisations to find out but not heard back yet.

see that was my thinking aswell if it aint on the list then its allowed stands to reason right, but i'm just scared that if i go and get a pup and we head there that customs become arseholes and label it a pit and refuse it entry cause of that.

I would think if you had some proof it's allowed it would be fine. What breed are you wanting?

I want a classic style bully not sure which bloodlines follow the classic style so need to look at that.

I really like the ADBA style pits but there obv out the question.

Yea. I personally like the classic also. You can always post breeders you find here and many will give you good advice on them.


And I think as long as you have papers stating what the breed is (AmBully) customs shouldn't be bad and that would help when you get at Australia.

Hi there!

I'm from Sydney, Australia and very active in the APBT/Anti-BSL community. Your post popped up in my google alert.

Our legislation is ridiculous. It is only the American Pit Bull Terrier and unpapered look alikes that are at risk here. American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are not restricted currently in any state in Australia.

If you are wanting to come to Aus and have the opportunity to live in any state then I recommend getting an AKC papered American Staffordshire Terrier (or Staffordshire Bull Terrier if you also like that type of dog). In the state that has the most harsh BSL law the only thing that will protect your dog is AmStaff papers and Amstaff papers only (this is written into the legislation). American Bullies are NOT a recognised breed here and any bit of research will tell the ACO/courts that they are pit mixes and the dog would not be safe.

Obviously I can't say for sure that Amstaffs won't be added to the list here in the future but at the moment their safety is ensured in every state as all states with BSL have lines in the registration stating that Amstaff papers protects the dog.
