Can you get them to just give you money to buy his food?
They could have given you the money instead of the vet, and you could have fed him for months on that.

Changing food is bad for the poor guy.
I mean, I get that they run on donations, but in special cases, they should be able to provide what's best for the dog. Otherwise he may as well be sitting in a shelter eating whatever trash they through in his run.

Everyone runs on donations. The tough thing about rescue is we take on a lot of dogs, but you always need to keep the individual DOG as the focal point. One of the reasons I provide food to my fosters is so that I know the dog is getting GOOD food (and to help out the Foster, who is doing a TREMENDOUS service, it shouldn't come out of THEIR pocket) It's also a premium way to go broke, lol. Most rescues don't provide food, in fact, CHAKO usually does not either. They really, really needed you to take Boss. He wouldn't be sitting in a run eating whatever they fed him there. He would be dead.
I would never feed a dog, foster or otherwise, something like Dog Chow, I just re-donate that stuff=) I think it ends up costing both the rescue, the dog, and the foster MORE in the long run.
Pumpkin is your best friend though.
