Problem with getting UKC registration from breeder
I was given an APBT around 18 months ago with the promise that registration papers and breeding rights would be following. I was told that we would get a breeding to the breeder's stud and that the breeder would get first pick. Now, we have puppies on the ground, no sign of registration paperwork on the girl, breeder is telling me that - because there are nine puppies, the standard with breeders is first and third pick. This guy was/is a friend of my husband, but we're feeling kind of ootchy about this. Something doesn't feel right. A check of UKC breeders does not turn up the kennel name he claimed to use or his or his wife's name in their listing of breeders. Husband has gone as far as to venture that, at some point, this guy may try to take our girl from us, claiming she is his and we were just keeping her for him. He's handed us multiple versions of multiple stories. Would like input on what this forum thinks about this. I'm a shepherd and a beekeeper. I've bred LGDs, but I've never encountered anything like this. I registered my litters as a rule and there were never situations like this. What am I missing here? Are we totally over-reacting? I'm not getting good communication from this guy and I'm feeling weirder about this as days pass.

First and third pick from a breeder is normal but you should have had a written contract. Is the mom registered? have you seen her paperwork? Before any pup leaves your house if you are suppose to have papers now on your dog don't give him any pups till he gives you papers.

The sire and dam of my girl were supposedly both registered. In fact, to hear the breeder tell it, he's bred champions. No, I have not seen registration papers on my girl. In addition, as I personally became more suspicious about this situation, I started researching and I can't find any mention of this guy ANYWHERE, or the kennel name he supposedly used either.
It's been mentioned that this guy could show up, claim my girl is really his and take her and the puppies. I had originally thought that the person doing the mentioning was overly paranoid, but now so much time has passed and I've not seen hide nor hair of my girl's paperwork and lots of ducking direct questions. I'm not looking for a magic wand to fix it; I'm wondering if someone needs to say to me, "Hey, chill out!" or "Hey, WATCH out!"

Watch out! lol Seriously I would press him for papers before he comes looks at your dogs. As far as a legit breeder for the UKC there is no real way to tell, anyone can throw two dogs together and try and call themselves a breeder so I'm not sure your going to find anything if you have already looked. If you never had a contract then he can't say much about taking the dog, he can say he owns it but without some sort of proof not sure he can take the dog and the whole litter.

Thanks, Performance Kennels!
I generally do trust my instincts and, this time, they were giving me red flags. I did find a reference to this breeder on another forum who has done the same thing with another buyer who bought two dogs from him and then he disappeared without handing over the registration papers to the new owners. It's interesting to me, in this age of technology, that there is no reference whatsoever to this person in any kind of search related to anything this guy ever told us about himself. None.

I agree with Lisa, tell him he can't see the pups until you get her papers. It's just good business. Tell him you are honestly tired of all the stories and are just trying to protect yourself from getting screwed over.

How long have you had her? If you bought her and have had her for a long time he can't just come take her without some sort of signed contract I believe. As far as the puppies go. Tell him exactly like Lisa said, don't even let him look at them without handing over papers. If he gets uppity tell him to leave and if he comes back you'll have him arrested for trespassing
