Hay! forums Happy New Year to all, I wanted to know are there any post on how long should a apbt should stay in his cage or kennel. Cause I starting a new job with more hours. I don't want to feel bad by leaving him in his cage all day. We do 20 min walks in the morning then back in the cage, another 20 min walk around 7pm. But if now me putting more hours at work the next walk would be at 10 or 11pm and he would had been in the cage all day. My family say that is abuse. He should be out in a field running around. They are hatters, they want me get the dog in the first place. Help me out.

The longest I would ever leave my dog in his kennel would be 8 hours and that would be an absolute emergency situation where I couldn't possibly get home sooner. I let my dog have free run of the house and he's been good. I think it's a little unfair to take the dog out 40 minutes a day then lock him up >8 hours (if that would be the case). Can you get home on your lunch break? I think it also depends on the personality of the dog, some couldn't care less but some are high strung and need that energy release!

What I can do is maybe keep him out longer for the walk @7pm and then take him back out @11pm.

I think all day is pushing it. 8 hours is a maximum. These dogs are very affectionate dogs and sometimes don't function well when left alone so long. Some breeds do like our chow chows, they could careless if we're there or not but "pit bull" type dogs not so much. I think you might want to look into having someone responsible go walk the dog in between or (like stated above) you should come home on your lunch breaks.

So when do you leave in the morning? As in what hours do you work? Is it possible to build a dog run outside and let your pup stay in a secure dog run while you are gone? 9-10 would be an absolute max I would leave a dog. Most people work an 8 hour job and you have to factor in travel to and from work so I think 8 hours is not really reasonable or practical. If you can't leave your pup outside what about hiring a dog walker to com by and do a few walks? they are not as expensive as you might think. I also hire the neighbor kid when I have to be gone 18 hours to let my dogs out. She is very responsible and good with them.

My boy used to be crated but he isn't anymore, he is left to chill on the couch while I am at work. He has the run of my apartment, except the bathroom. I have had a dog walker come by and I have a sister who lives in the apartment upstairs, but typically my boy is left from 3:15PM until about 12:15am. I know when he gets older I will have to have a regular dog walker, but don't think I abuse him at all by leaving him all afternoon and evening. I don't think you should feel bad. But like PK said it depends on how long he is in it? Do you have 2 jobs? so you come home and leave again? I walk my boy for about 4-5 miles when we get up, this is before he is left. and then another few miles when I get home from work.

if you're working all day every day, and your pup is only getting 40 min of walking a day, you shouldn't own a bully breed...they have too much energy for that.

with that said, i work rotating 12 hr shifts, but my roommate works a 9 hr a day job, so on the days that i'm working day shift and he's working as well, the pup is in the kennel for about 8 hrs. luckily that only equates to about 5 days a month, otherwise he only spends about 2-3 hrs a day in the kennel while i'm at the gym/errands/etc on average.

do you work rotating shifts? and what exactly is your work schedule? your post isn't the best use of grammar and is somewhat confusing because of this.

I used to have to leave my dogs in their crate for around 12 hours...but when i was home they were out all the time....they were kenneled when i was sleeping but thats because i have dogs that chew lmao....oh and i wont risk a fight breaking out while im gone.

Odin is older(2ish) and Boss is my foster (8 months) and they each spend about 10hrs a day in their crates while im at work. and then Boss sleeps in his kennel at night cuz i dont trust him not to get into something, not to mention the risk of a fight when im asleep.
