I could use some help!

I am a first time Pitbull owner and I adopted him at 6 months from my room mates brothers girlfriend he is now 1 year. Rocky has a serious problem with showing dominance over other dogs especially males that are still intact. There is one dog in particular that Rocky just goes APE SHIT, I am talking CRAZY, I have never seen him snap like he does he doesn't even give that dog a chance to get near him. Its a British Mastiff that is still intact. I can take Rocky out to the dog park but he has to jump on the biggest male there and show them whos boss and he wont back down he is not submissive at all what do I do? I try and get him out to the dog park to socialize him 3+ times a week but I keep him on his leash and I walk him frequently. I want to be able to let him off the leash and let him play with other dogs, also Rocky is still intact.

Please help and tips appreciated!

Thanks!!

Please read the following thread regarding pit bulls and dog parks: Pitbull's and Dog Parks

The best thing you can do for you and your boy - who sounds like he is showing signs of dog aggression already at the age of one - is to steer clear of the dog parks. The breeds which fall under the "pit bull" label are known to be dog aggressive regardless of the amount of socialization you provide them.

But in reality, your dog does not need doggy friends and despite what many people believe, a dog can still be a good dog and a great companion even if it does not get along with other animals.

Why did you get a bully breed if you wanted to go to dog parks?

Pitbull's and Dog Parks
Day at The Park - A Poem written for the Dog Park Lover's
So you want an APBT?

So, hopefully you came back after reading those links. And now you realize although you made some mistakes, you can get a trainer to help you learn to manage your boys aggression. But for the sake of ALL bully breed owners worldwide, stay out of dog parks. You can get a long lead and go to a ball field, tennis or baseball field. get a treadmill, make walking groups with other dog owners you know and can trust. Please stop bringing your dog off leash around other animals owners and dogs you don't know.

Well he does great with 95% of dogs except a select few. I do notice that he does hop on other dogs a lot though he gets on their backs, not too sure what that means, I am assuming dominance? When I do take him out there and keep him on the leash he cries waggles his tale and he just looks like he wants to play...and when I am able to take him off the leash he does run around and play with other dogs I really don't want to take that away from him, he seems to really enjoy it.

All it takes it one time for your dog to have a disagreement with another dog, regardless of who the instigator was, it could mean a new breed ban because you were willing to put your faith in 95%? It's not worth it - arrange play dates with dogs he does get along with, in your own yard ,or the yard of a person you know and trust. Even a 5% chance is not something I would want to put my bets on.

Ames you obviously think its the breed that is aggressive...well in my opinion its not. I know plenty of bully owners who take their dogs to dog parks and let them off the leash....dont give the bully breed a bad name by assuming that he is aggressive because he is a pitbull its all about how you raise them and obviously I wasnt able to for the first 6 months of his life, so I am just trying to break his bad habits. The previous owner would praise him for being aggressive towards other dogs.

I understand. I realize it would always be Rocky's fault no matter who instigated it. I really just don't feel like taking something he loves so much away from him.

No it's not all in how you raise them. Dog aggression is a genetic trait that many many pit bull type dogs share. These dogs were bred for fighting and that shouldn't be taken lightly. By letting your dog run around off leash at dog parks you are putting that dog at risk. All it takes is for one dog to snap at him, and like you said your self he won't back down. Regardless of which dog starts it YOUR dog will be blamed, taken away and killed all based on looks. There is a great way to avoid that, don't take your dog to dog parks and you should never trust a pit bull not to fight. And please don't get it twisted a dog aggressive APBT is not the same thing as a mean or vicious dog. These dogs were bred to not show aggression to human beings what so ever despite their tenacity in the pit. Dog aggression is an acceptable trait, human aggression is the ultimate APBT sin. Please please read up on the history of this breed, it's temperament and breed traits so you know what to expect and what to watch out for as this dog grows.

wrong. wrong. wrong.
nature vs nurture is not that simple. especially in canines.
dogs are not like humans. we have the ability to pretend to like someone. we shake hands. fake smile. use our civilized conversation skills. and play nice. dogs don't have that ability. particularly bulldogs. when DNA says it's go time... it's GO TIME!
take the time to learn the history of your dog. only then can you do right by him.

Great post!! I used to be a believer of that myself but you and a few others here are what inspired me to start looking into this further.

Well thank you sweetie. I'm glad that we could help you get a better understanding of these breeds. I find it very sad that a lot of "advocates" and even rescue centers are spreading around so much misinformation. I don't think they truly realize how harmfull that really is to these dogs.

Great advice has been given to you! Many of us have been around, trained and owned bully breeds for many years. Please don't set your dog up to fail by continuing to take him to dog parks. It only takes one time for an accident to happen and the vicious cycle continues...

Herding dogs have herding tendencies, hunting dogs have hunting instincts, guarding breeds have guarding instincts...and yes, dogs That have been bred to fight will have dog aggressive tendencies. It doesn't mean he is a bad dog!

you are the very type of person that needs this dog taken from you now before you ruin it for others!

These are pit dogs, a fighting breed that loves to fight as a man scratches his balls when they itch!!

You give the breed a bad name my not honoring the warrior in his blood!

You will never train it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think what gets people is that they think petbulls are APBTs and don't understand that all these dogs they've grown up with and been conditioned to see as APBTs are not APBTs at all. So many say "I've grown up with pit bulls all my life and never seen dog aggression" well most those dogs are just poorly bred mixes or look a like breeds that don't display the same traits. They are not one in the same.

NOT BASHING ON YOU but....
You got a free dog, you raised it like a pet and now that it is maturing the dominance (dog aggression) comes out a little. Then you asked about it so it is obviously bothering you that your dog goes crazy ape shit over a certain dog. Lets call it selective dominance (dog aggression). It comes at around a year old. Some earlier, some at 3 years old. Some never ever show signs and/or ever even get into a scrape. But a dominant (dog aggressive) dog that shows these signs at this age is the perfect time for YOU to put your dog on a leash and avoid the issues that cause him to go ape shit on some one else's pet.
If a police officer ever sees that behavior in your dog, it will be deemed aggressive. Probably taken and euthed because the dog has been labeled as aggressive.
All the info you need is available if you have an open mind. You owe it to your dog to ensure he has an educated owner to keep him safe
