When is it time to let go?

Okay so Warheads heartworm treatment is through he started on prevenative about a week ago but chaos is a diff. story I so far have had to take her back for 3 emergency visits and have postponed her last treatment now for 2month due to complications (2 pulminary imbolisms, coughing up blood, swollen abdomin but with no fluids) She is back at the vets now were she has to stay overnight and get chest xrays because treatment for the imbolism hasn't helped and her abdomin is now swollen to twice the size it was before we started the treatment but doesn't have fluids in it we checked............. She's also breathing heavily and still hacking which is normal but still is to much for a dog that's in her crate for over 23hrs a day for the past 3 months........I won't know anything till tomorrow about her x-rays but on to my question when is it time to let go I mean like I said she's been confined to her crate for 3 months no only to go out to do her business then right back in she gets no interaction with us or warhead which misses her so much anyway she's miserable and you can tell she is I know her body is sore from laying still for 3 months I've been keeping her pretty sedated (vets orders) to help but I just feel like I'm making her death more miserable then it has to be..........I mean my vet is willing to keeping trying as long as we are but I guess how I feel is come tomorrow and the vet say she's not gonna make it and has to be pts I feel like she will have died a miserable 3month prolonged death................................ I'm just stressed right now I know I wouldn't want to be confined to a cage this long................not to mention this went from a 400.00 treatment to now over 1500.00 just for chaos which is fine I just wish there was a shread of hope that she would make it ...........

I think that 1 month of going through not being able to do the things that they once did, is time to lay them to rest. I don't know if you've read the Cesar Millan book, but there's a chapter in there that covers putting dog's to rest. The interesting point that I took out of it, was where it mentions that dogs don't get depressed when we find out that they have cancer or illness, they keep living, but once they aren't able to function like normal, they begin to realize and possibly suffer. So his suggestion is to put them down before they go through any of that, and they will pass on having lived a happy life. I'm sorry that you're going through this, and hope that you're able to stay strong through it all.

I put my dog down when it was more pain for the dog or discomfort than I believed was necessary.
