Outdoor Flea Control
Hi Guys!
I'm new to this site and I'm looking forward to getting/giving feedback about raising and training pits. I have recently adopted a 6 week (7 now) old puppy. His mother passed away and the people who saved him gave him to me and my boyfriend to raise. Now, we've had pits before (our 3yr old recently passed from lung complications) but never one this young. In fact, had the mother not passed, we would have waited until he was 8 weeks old.
Anyway, our little one has a heart murmur and the vet said it could be an "innocent" one. His roundworms are being treated (his second dose of meds is in 2 weeks) but my concern is this:
Our neighborhood (Altadena/Pasadena, CA) has a large population of feral cats - with tons of FLEAS! They roam our backyard and sprawl on our grass. Our little one, we were told, is too small for flea control/preventative meds. So how can I protect him from these fleas when he's already begun to be trained to go "potty" in our backyard? Is there any medication less potent or a grass treatment to kill the fleas w/o harming Gratch??
Thank you,
Carol

Do a search on fleas on here and you will find a ton of information. We just had several conversations this summer about this topic. However if you have cats constantly coming over with fleas it will be difficult. I would start by calling the pound.

if the cats keep coming into your grass there isn´t to many things to do, I´m having a similar problem with flea control, cats keep coming into my yard and fleas keep appearing.

as far as getting them off of him Dawn Dish Soap baths are safe enough until he is older, they should shed right off...that is what we had to do with Sydney, because when I got her she was 'smothered and covered'! Gotta love a byb...

I don't want to post the website since it looks like spam so I wil just say this quote comes from the website.
"Advantix can be used on puppies from seven weeks of age, as well as pregnant and lactating animals. This product is not for use on cats. "
--------------------------------
I always use advantix. I use it with out worry and I use frontline for my cats as needed. My cats are indoor only so we never have fleas. If a cat sneaks out I will treat both cats with frontline.

The vet recommended Revolution because he was 7 weeks then, 8 weeks now. I am going to try it because it is said to prevent heartworms as well. Thanks again!!

I don't use any kinds of medicines for fleas or ticks. I have a do it yourself that works wonders for all my animals.
Ticks/fleas
- Add 1/2 cup fresh or dried rosemary to 1 quart of boiling water
- Boil for 20 minutes, strain and allow solution to cool
- Wash and dry pet thoroughly, then apply rosemary solution with a spray bottle or sponge
- Allow pet to air dry
It is safe to use on all 6 of my dogs and 3 cats. I apply about once a month and save a fortune as opposed to buying from my vet or petmeds.com or whatever. Never had an issue with it. Just be careful and don't spray it into their eyes. I apply with a sponge around the neck, face, and head and a spray bottle on the rest of the body.

I’ve never heard of this recipe. Is this for repealing Fleas, Killing Ault Fleas or stopping the entire lifecycle of a flea. I’m always very interested in natural solutions.

It is your basic generic form of Advantix. Does the exact same thing. So yeah it kills and repels them. I have been using it for 4 or 5 years and never had an issue with fleas or ticks on my old dogs or my new ones. I have told friends who are also pet owners ( couple have "outside" dogs only or cats that roam the neighborhood ) and they have never had an issue either. I believe it helps keep the vast majority of mosquitos away too. Not 100% sure since I have a bug zapper and citronella candle going 24/7 during the summer since I live next to a pond.

Thank you for your response. I have only used Fontline once and that was because it stopped the entire cycle of a flea. I will do some research on the net to expand your explanation and to see if it just repels or kills fleas. Regardless, Very interesting.
Thanks,
EF

Thanks for this response. I am definitely going to try this - anything that won't harm my little one.
