Any Suggestions???

I’m looking for some suggestions for a problem with bumps on Lux. I’ve been battling what appear to be hives or some type of allergic reaction. It started on Monday when we noticed that Lux had a large number of bumps on his body. He was not scratching himself so I assumed he was not itching and there were no issues with his breathing. The bumps do not have any pustule heads or any type of odor. I gave him 50mg of Benadryl with a little bit of peanut butter. After several hours the bumps were gone. Tuesday morning we awoke to Lux covered in bumps again this time they were even on his head. Again, no itching or respiratory issues at all. We gave him 50mg of Benadryl. This time the Benadryl only reduced the number and size of the bumps. After about 4 hours I gave Lux another 50mg of Benadryl. We’ve been giving Lux 50mg of Benadryl twice a day. The number, size and location of the bumps change all day long. I was thinking that Lux was possibly having a reaction to a flea bite. The reason I thought it could be some type of bite was that nothing has changed in his food, daily routine or environment. So I bought a broad spectrum pesticide and sprayed the yard. I also bought Adam’s flea spray and sprayed both his crate bedding at home and at my office. I’m lucky that I can bring both Lux and Miss Tweak to work with me every day. Yesterday (Wednesday) when I got home from work we feed Lux and give him 50mg of Benadryl then it was off to the bathroom. I gave both Lux and Tweak a bath using Head & Shoulders (we’ve always used Head & Shoulder to bath our dogs) dried them off and sprayed them down with Adam’s Flea Spray. At this point his bumps were almost gone. We woke up today (Thursday) at 4:30AM with little to no bump on Lux. By 6:00AM the bumps were back. Any suggestions?

i know kolby swells up when misquitos bite him, but it usually goes down with in an hour. i would bring it up to your vet, or either look at the food that you are feeding, he could be having a reaction to sufmin that's in it. i would also suggest using baby shampoo to wash b/c it will be MUCH gentler on him, and try to rub a little baby lotion on him after to help his skin not be so dry. if you dont want to use baby shampoo, use DAWN, it works wonders for fleas! they will drop rite off, and it's not harsh for their skin. hope lux feels better soon! good luck!

I would strongly suggest a trip to the vet...who knows what he could be having an allergic reaction to. To speculate would be just that speculation. I would have some tests run to determine what may be the cause or causes for this reaction.

Thanks for the suggestions Chic4pits,
Actually Head & Shoulders is VERY gentle on the dogs and because it’s a dander formulated shampoo it actually helps condition the skins. Plus, for some reason it makes them smell good for a long time. I would suggest it to anyone plus it’s pretty inexpensive. It also works like Dawn in that it kills adult fleas.

If Lux was in any type of distress we would run him straight to our Vet. Other than the bump you’d never know there was anything wrong with him. We were advised by our Vets tech to bath him and give him 50mg of Benadryl twice a day for three days. If there was no improvement in three day then we need to bring him in.

By the second day we also thought that might be a possibility, knowing that peanut allergies a very common. So we switch to putting his Benadryl in cheese. Unfortunately it didn’t make much of a difference.

I appreciate all of your suggestions.
Cheers,
EF

Quick update. It was fleas that made Lux breakout in hives. We had a flea outbreak at either my office or in our backyard. We sprayed down the yard and lit a fogger in the warehouse and put Frontline on both dogs. Problem resolved.
