Cool New "Pit" Owners in NJ - Questions

Hello,
We recently got a "pit puppy" from my firehouse. The tour before me found him chained to a pole for a few days, a lil beat up n skinny. His stool was basically water. they took him in and got him to the vet. We had planned on keeping him but there were "issues" with another tour in the house so I volunteered to keep him.

Wife and I are new to owning dogs, we have been around dogs and even doggy-sat for people in the past. We love our new 40+lb "puppy" but figured we'd get together on a forum to get some tips/tricks/information to properly love/train/keep this dog...

Here are the questions:
1. How can I tell his age?
- I read about teeth, they are pure white and pretty big in the front (over 1")
- He responds to (after some work) basic commands - sit/stay/etc

2. How can I tell the breed?

More to come...

Here are some pics of Chips (if they attach correctly):

Welcome to the forum! There is really no way to tell what exactly your dog is(apbt, AmBully, etc) since he was just found and there aren't papers or anything. He is very cute though! Your vet should be able to give an about age for him when he goes in though. I'm not sure how to tell on your own though.

Thank You!

Yeah,
When the guy took him from the firehouse the vet said he's under a year old... I was not there... I was wondering if there was something that make it more "pin-point-able" if you will...

He's pretty good, a lil stubborn but pretty good...

He seems good around other dogs... He wags his tail n seems happy but he tries to get on top of them... Is that normal? He "played" with a puppy great dane last night (the dane towered over him) & he kept going under him & then he would back up and try to jump on his back. not biting or anything but I kept stopping him. Is that normal? I don't know how dogs "play" so I dont know...

For my two that's normal lol. They like to stand over each other and Cain is shorter than Sheba so he "jumps" on her back and just hands there lol. And I'm not sure of there is a way to pinpoint a more accurate age. Someone else might know though

Oh ok...
Yeah I mean they seemed ok, no biting, barking or aggression but I wasn't sure if that was a "bad" dominating behavior that I should stop him from doing or not. Again we are new to it & I've been spending a lot of time reading up on pits and training tips and stuff but more knowledge with people who actually have pits on a pit forum is probably better.

We have him pretty good with pulling while walking but he sees another dog and he wants to BOLT right towards them. He's wagging his tail but I'm trying to get him to stay next to me and not try to pull me over. any tips for that? I ordered a chest harness... Are they any good...

I don't use a harness, we have a regular collar for mine. Use the search bar and type in NILIF and read up on it. You'll have to train him to focus on you when walking. Performance has a video about how to teach the watch command so when you're doing something you can tell him to watch and have him look at you. Ill see if I can link it. He has to know you're in charge so I would recommend lots of obedience training with him to keep him focused. Teach him the wait command also.

I saw it...
First and foremost I appreciate the help...

He is pretty good with repetition. He is learning that when I take him for a walk he has to sit by the door while I put the leash on his collar(I haven't got the other one in yet - I may not have to use it), waiting til I tell him to go out the door, etc. He listens better to me than my wife. I'm assuming that's just because I've spent more time with him in general because of my work schedule. I didn't think of using "watch" was the command. I was trying his name "Chips." Is that acceptable or should that be reserved for something else?

I have to try the "watch" with the treats & see if that helps. He doesn't respond to his name really too much. maybe still learning...

I have to search that "NILIF" thing, what is that?

He is probably still learning his name. Cain took forever it felt to learn his. For me, cain responds to a little whistle. If i do it he pays attention or comes to me. We are going to do the watch command but thats one way i get his attention. Is your dog food motivated? if so use it to your advantage. My boy is very food motivated. The NILIF is basically about putting yourself as Alfa and making sure the dog knows you're in charge. I think it's a sticky under training. Not sure exactly where it is.
Do you have children? If so you will want your children to work with him too so he knows they are in charge also.
And you're very welcome.

I looked up the NILIF thing on here and found a few interesting posts as well as a very well written descriptive explanation... I have to get into that mindset BUT it must be done.

I'll be honest I feel bad not petting him when he comes over and asks for it considering where he came from I just want to show him love. at the same time though I have to do this so that he obeys and we can do more things together without issues...

I appreciate all your help, time & advice... I'm sure you will be hearing from me again as well as seeing him around the site. I wish they had that Petguide app you are posting from for Android... It says "Coming Soon" on the site. I am going to continue trying to learn as much as I can for both mine & Chips' sake.

I understand. It was hard for me to not give Cain love when he demanded it(and he was very demanding haha) but since doing all that everything runs much smoother here. There is a lot of great information on this site. That's where I have learned half of the things I do is from here. I hope everything goes well for your and chips. The breed is very smart. Cain was so easy to train. Will be waiting for updates and new pictures of your boy

I also would encourage your wife to work with him. That way he listens to you both equally. He knows you're both in charge. Don't let him think he can push her around or get away with more around here.

I didn't know android didn't have to app yet. I love it. Much easier than using web browser on my phone!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone...

Chips is starting to "get it" more n more. I'm learning with him as we are new dog owners as well. My wife took him out alone a few times for play, long walks, commands, etc this weekend as well as some times with me & we saw some real progress...

It's funny...
He is one dog when we visit the firehouse and another at home...

We got him this brand new dogie bed (a friend jokes that he would sleep in it because it was soo comfortable) and he has it for 10min n pees on it... NOOOOO!!!! lol

Which brings me to my next question. What's the best way to schedule/arrange/time/figure out when to walk him? As well is what is the best method to reprimand him? I read that positive reinforcement works best with these dogs but how do I "positively" reprimand him?
