New Adopt APBT Owner
Hello Everyone! I'm new to the website but have learned a lot from it prior to adopting my 1 1/2 year old Sage Female Pit Bull Mix. I found her on a rescue page and knew she was the one. I have owned the breed a long time ago and not for very long, sadly. But now its a different story Sage is the sweetest dog, I couldn't have asked for a better girl. I know she is skinny (53.5lbs) the shelter officer told me she dropped it all in the month she was there. I'm feeding her Acana twice a day and loving her all day. Any advice/tips with putting weight or anything adopt related are more then welcome! Thank You Glad to be a part of the site.

Aww she's beautiful. I give my female pit home made dog treats. I pack them full of extra protein and all natural ingredients. If you don't have time to make them, there are some pretty good brands out there that you can buy or order. I feed my pit twice a day, but also I give her quite a few healthy treats during the day too. It helps with extra calories and protein.

Thank You. That's a good idea I never thought about baking treats before. She loves her treats. What's your favorite recipe? I would like to try it out asap. Your female is pretty.

That prong collar needs to be higher on her neck. Leerburg Dog Training | How to Fit a Prong Collar
You will be amazed at how much more effective it is when fitted correctly.
I would say she doesn't need too much more weight on. But definitely enough to cover those hip points and spine.

Ah Thank you for the link it was need. I had no idea. Going to fit it properly next time we walk.
I have to agree with you on the weight. After looking around on the site I see a mix of fit and non fit. I dont want strangers looking at Sage and think wow this guy is abusing that dog. :\

Unfortunately most people don't understand what an in shape dog looks like. They all think fat=healthy.

Agree. I've been noticing that her spine going away slowly everyday. But I guess on Acana if I feed her correctly she can't get fat with regular walks and playing.
Also read the site you linked me to and tried it last nite on our walk and noticed a big difference.
Attached a picture of her sleeping with her favorite blanket.

welcome to the site and good on u for adopting! and im also happy to hear that the prong is working good for u! often times people dont know how to fit it and when it doesnt work, they blame the prong.
also wanted to say Acana is great food! and yes if u exercise her regularly and feed accordingly, u wont have to worry about "putting on weight", it will come back by itself. i made that mistake when i got my boy from the shelter, he was almost as skinny as ur girl, 49lbs, and put on 20lbs in 2 weeks! but by another 10lbs i realized that he was now over weight, and ive trimmed him down nicely since then. but to sum it up, once she gets comfortable with u and her new home, the weight will come back on its own

Thank you! Oh adopting was the only way for me. It makes me sick to see how desperate people are on Craigslist well here in Dallas anyway trying to sell pit bull pups. I swear I saw one post stating if he doesn't sell his pups but this weekend they are going to a shelter. Goes to show how much he really cares for the breed let alone dogs. Just not fair.
Her pulling isn't over the top bad but I had rather get it under control and then let it go away naturally. We went on a quick walk this morning and had little to no pull.
Oh I did some homework when it came time to pick food. I almost went with TOTW. But after reading ACANAs website I knew that was the way to go. She love it. The shelter where she was from was feeding her VICTOR. Kinda funny now that I bought ACANA my neighbor is thinking of switching her dog (the black and white pit bull in the picture above) he has mild allergies to the food she's feeding him.
Wow I'm sure she'll gain it quick then. No to worried. Sage is loved by my family and neighbor.

Ha now that I think about I read one of your post about TOTW. Well the place I was able to locate Acana by my house isn't a pet store really it's labeled nursery/ organic store but are a dealer of both champion foods. So I'm sure they honor something along those lines. And lucky you for the extra bonus. :/
Here are the pictures of Sage that caught me eye and told me she was the one.
