New From Missouri
Hello,
I am an IT Specialist from Missouri. I used to have a mixed Brindle 1/2 Pit, 1/2 Rott female named angel. She was an awesome dog, had her from a very young pup. Well, fast forward 10 years or so, she has been dead for about 2 years now. I have decided I would like to get another pup, but am doing some intense research first. I plan on getting one sometime in the next year or two, but was thinking about maybe getting a pair, male and female. I say in a year or two, because I am a little OCD when it come to wanting to know what I am stepping into before I get there. I will probably research for the next year, then take the plunge. I have met some good breeders of the breed, and think I can get me my starters at a real good price, all registered. I have 4 children, 9years old 6years old, and a set of 17 month old twins. I am not worried about the kids with the dogs, but we are also starting a chicken breeding program for the kids, and fear that the dogs may want to kill the chickens. Thanks for all your work you all put into sites like this for the education of newbies like myself.

I am in IT as well. Welcome!
Well if you want multiple dogs to live in leave and harmony forever and ever and do not want the potential of having to crate and rotate your dogs I would not get an Pit bull. Just my 2 cents. Many people have long healthy lives on crate and rotate and many purple have multiples dogs that are ok together sometimes. And some have dogs that are ok almost all the time. But MOST people I know with multiple pit bulls crate and rotate.
American bully (another breed) are known to be more dog social but its still a risk and they should never be left alone together without adult supervision. So why do you want 2? Double the training and double the bills. lol

First, thanks for the reply and the welcome. So you are saying that I will have a problem between male and female wanting to fight a lot? I want two, so if I want, I can breed them.

A true American pit bull terrier will fight no matter what the sex of the other dog is. There's a saying 'never trust a pit bull not to fight.' Hundreds of years of fighting blood runs through these dogs' veins. So, simply put, yes. You will still most likely have a problem with them trying to fight.
And is there a reason you'd want to breed them? Conformation showing, weight pull, hunting, etc.?

This is one thing I will be researching in the next year or two. I love to look of the breed, and would, possibly, go with conformation, or weight pulling, maybe something else. I am in the preliminary stages, and that is why I am here. I would like to do some sort of activities with them, though.

welcome aboard fellow missourian... this is a great place to start your research!.. if it were me i'd probably start out with one pup cause you can spend more time concentrating on it rather than having to divide your time, two pups at once could be quite the handful...

Well stick around there is lots to learn around here . There are many things to Look for in a dog let alone one you want to breed. Definitely not something I jump into. I would look into finding a reputable kennel and seeing if they will work with you. But do tons of research first. There are far too many dogs out there because of people breeding just because they can. So check out the different sections see shows in your area and narrow down a breed you are interested in before you even think about breeding.
And there is no guarantee your pups will fight and there is no guarantee they will not. Depends on the circumstances and the dogs. Who knows! Thy are just dogs and most people don't get alone with each other 100% of the time why Would dogs? I just like People to be duly aware before they get multiple lives of dogs involved if they could really hack it. It's super easy to crate and rotate. Many do it successfully. Some people who have dogs that really do not like other dogs, like me would rather just have my boy so he could be around all the time. To each their own! Just be prepared.

First off I just want to say I think it's great that your doing your research. So many don't and give up their dogs for displaying normal breed traits. APBTs were bred for fighting, no matter how many people hate that or want to turn away from it, it is FACT. Dog aggression is a genetic trait many of them share. That is part of this breed and just because the dogs are opposite sexes doesn't mean they'll get along. Sometimes they can display this trait very young, a few months old, or sometimes it's brought on with maturity. The thing is, if you can't handle crating and rotating, and exercising and feeding them separately then a pair is not a good idea.
On the breeding, they're so so much that goes into breeding. It's not just sticking two dogs together and hoping for the best. Breeding should be done to better the breed so making sure those dogs are the best is crucial. Having a good understanding of bloodlines, genetics, temperament, and breed standard would be the best place to start, even before picking the pup. You must know what you want to get out of it before you can pick what goes into it. Then after picking a dog, that dog must prove that it's an exception representation of the breed in every way. Work that dog, health and temperament test that dog and make sure it's 100% sound, any problems health and temperament wise can be passed down to pups. By health testing I don't mean going to the vet I mean REAL health testing like cardiac, thyroid, Penn-hip and so on. Then if you do decide to breed after that just remember, every puppy you produce is your responsibility. Pups always find homes cause they're cute and small but people rarely keep then which is why the rescues and shelters are overflowing. If you can't afford to feed and support 6-10 puppies for their entire lives then don't breed. Breeding will not make you money, you'll be lucky to even break even.
