Hyper puppy training

Any ideas on how to get a hyper puppy to calm down so he'll pay attention to training? LOL

It seems like he'll only pay attention for a few seconds and then go running off. So, I have to keep him on a leash and try and try and try. I do this several times a day, but it doesn't seem like it's sticking.

Then again, we've only been training for a few days. My other dog was just so calm compared to this one...

are you using a treats??? and do you have your pup in a area with no distractions because its very hard if you do training where there is distractions. the last questions does you pup like to play with toys like a ball or sumthing because you can train using a toy if your dog like to play rather have treats jus channel his energy for the positive work him there is alot you can do with his energy. if none of that works try working him for a good time then after working him try training he will be more focused .. hope this helps

I got a good suggestion... Wear him out! Run around with him in your yard, play with a flirt pole ( i made mine for 7 bucks at lowes), play tug, take him for a walk...

And when he's nice and tired... He'll probably be hungry and will listen a lot better. A tired, hungry puppy gets distracted less and is more willing to please.

Lol well I started Chino out in obedience classes at 7 weeks... I learned after the first couple of weeks that taking him right after a nap would be a disaster, so instead I would run around with him in the store around all the beds (cuz we would go straight from work) and get him tired and hungry. Then it hardly matters what treats you use as long as it's edible LMAO

I found a squeaky toy he likes and just did a lot of fetch in the house. It's raining and that's even making it hard for potty training, but we're still doing OK. He's doing real good with fetch, and has had to have done "sit" a hundred times by now, but still wont do it by command only. I have to push on his end a little to get him to sit.

It's only been a few days with him, I have to remind myself he's not going to get it all that fast. I'm not sure he's even ready for "stay" much less "focus".

I'm trying to teach him several commands at the same time is there any routine I should try or should I cut back on the amount of commands I'm aiming for?

Work on one or two commands until he has them down, and then when you introduce new commands, incorporate the older ones from time to time. Don't over do it though, you want training sessions to be fun. I used to push Chino's little butt down if he didn't sit on command.. It's a good way to do it, because it reminds them of the motion. When their butt touches the ground, praise like crazy. Don't use treats every time. If you push him down, praise but dont reward. Keep sessions about 5-10 minutes, and you can do like 15-20 minutes if you spread it out throughout the day

I would work on focus first. It is so much easier to train a dog that will focus on you instead of everything else around you.

I teach my dogs the watch me game I start out as soon as I bring them home. DaVinci and Vendetta were both only 4 weeks old when we started doing this.

Then I would work on sit. Sit is easy if you hold a treat right by their nose and then push the treat back over the top of their head they will sit cause they are following the treat. Make sure you PRAISE that up good. I mix it up and use a treat like three times then only prasie then a treat again. I want my dogs to listen to me not look for a treat every time they do something right.

How does the focus game work?

I'm having a real hard time with focus, but he's doing good with sit, lay and stand. Pretty easy combination. Before breakfast I played squeak toy fetch for about 20 minutes. Then once he started slowing down I get a hand full of puppy food and go through the commands with him. Pretty simple.

I need help on focus training now :P

I'm still having a hard time. Maybe I'm missing something. Can someone explain a few different ways to do it? I've done a lot of searches and most say the same thing, but he doesn't seem to be too interested in it LOL

I would like to have this "focus game" explained as well, if you're not too busy

Focus... Or watch me. Pick one of the two. When you say watch me, or focus, and your dog makes eye contact with you, praise them. I touch my nose when I say watch me and they focus in on my eyes, and normally look until i say "good watch me".. I alternate between treats and praise, but it's just like anything else. A few hundred times down the row your dog will snap their neck trying to focus on command.. LOl just keep at it
