Question Face snapping / nipping

So Lex is a little over a year now...
He's got the sit, stay, paw routine down & potty training is complete.

Lately he's been showing a little angst when playing fetch when I have the ball in hand & he's sitting waiting. He'll stare up at me for about 10 seconds & nip at my face. Of course I scold him as soon as this happens but I notice he gets this weird look in his eye as he's about to react & nip.

Now it doesn't strike fear in me but it does spark a concern, is he testing me?
Also when we first get home from work & let him out of his kennel, he's super happy, excited & immediately wants to be pet. But when you go to pet him he starts finger nipping. He doesn't do it hard & it never hurts but it's annoying, I tell him to stop of course. But then when my husband goes to play with him, he'll tap him on his mouth making him chase his hands. I have asked him to stop this feeling it encourages bad/annoying behavior yet he-the husband refuses to listen. Then complains when the dog does the very thing he encourages, hand nip.

What should I do?

Either get your husband to stop or deal with the consequences, sounds like dominant behavior is being encouraged and if it's not contained it will only get worse and you could begin to see dominance aggression.

i would make a lot bigger deal about nipping putting teeth anywhere on the body.
tiva is 14 wks old and occasionally she'll put teeth to skin, and i make a huge deal about it.
nismo will never even think about doing it.
call it animal cruelty or abuse, but i would lay nismo out if he so much as play nips and gets me.

IMO just make a huge deal about that action. im not saying hit your dog, just make sure he knows that that is the worst thing he can do and he will get into big trouble.

If a dog is not corrected, in their eyes their actions have little to no reprecussion. I agree with Nizmo, make it seem like Momma doesn't love him anymore and he'll stop pretty quick.

Yeah, that's what I keep telling him but his dumb butt just smiles & laughs it off. I'm ready to pop him - it's exactly why we had the problem with his lab & he just doesn't seem to care the severity of his actions... Especially this weekend after the way his stupid aunt & mother treated me. But that's another story.

What can i do to reverse & counteract the signs of this behavior & encourage my husband to take this seriously?

I don't agree with all of Cesar Milan's tactics but I saw him take an 'aggressive' dog & mentally wear him/her down by holding it down on the ground insinuating who's dominant.

Is that what I should do the next time he does this? My meemaw (my grandma) had a tactic that she taught me growing up to flick an animal on their nose if they started undesirable behavior. I've tried this on my cats & has worked & have yet to have a reason to try this on Lex until now but wanted to get your opinions.

Thanks for the quick responses guys

I get what you're saying about making it a huge deal, he's never actually bit my face he stopped right before hitting skin but he came darn near close. I wasn't sure how to react & wanted opinions first before I over reacted.

yes, but a pitbull putting any mouthing, or teeth on human skin is a BIG no no.
if your dog puts playing teeth on a kid, and that kid says that dog bit me when it was just playing. you know how that will be portrayed.
as for the hold the dog down. i do that to nismo. but i have heard VERY bad things about that, nismo is purebred, and i notice it more and more everyday.
its just the what if the dog up and wants to challenge your dominence, i've heard your dog needs to respect your dominance not fear it.
but idk, i believe nismo repects and has a level of fear also in the sense that i am the dominant one.

I'm going to make a few changes & see how things go the next few weeks.

First, he will no longer be allowed on the couch or the bed. Maybe this will make him realize he's not an 'equal'.

Second, when I go to feed him, I will make him 'earn' his dinner before feeding him. Making him do a small trick before I put the bowl down.

Third, maybe take his toys away & give him one at a time then trade out.

In the mean time talk to the husband & inform him of the face snap I encountered today.

Lex is a purebred but he's not average size he's rather tiny in comparison because he was the 'runt'. As far as mouthing & other kids, that's precisely why I want to nip this in the bud, not only for my sake but his. He's been around other kids & loves them but hasn't been around them long enough for me to really judge how he'd be 24/7. So if we have kids in the future, I'd like to ensure he knows his boundaries.

I really think at first this was innocent play that turned into a bad habit & now he's beginning to test his boundaries. Which I know is not cool & should have never allowed it in the first place so i'm nipping this in the bud immediately.
