Serious problem with Veronica's table manners

I don't know what happened...one day I realized that Veronica's table manners were atrocious. I mean she was acting like she was raised in a barn by a pack of jackels.

I asked myself where I went wrong. Perhaps I wasn't an assertive enough pack leader? So I remedied the situation by approaching her in a very authoritative manner and poking her in the neck while simultaneously making a very commanding "TSSST" sound.

I think I hit a pressure point because she just toppled over.

Then I realized that the problem was beyond me and that I needed to send her away for training. We found a very exclusive and rigorous; if not somewhat controversial boarding and training facility...and off she went.

Overall, I think I am pleased with the results; but I want to know if you guys think I made the right decision.

You guys don't like to teach your dogs to do things...just to make their minds work...and to have them learn...to have them get accustomed to the process of learning?

You may not see the value in training tricks, but I think the process of the training translates into other activities. If your dog gets accustomed to learning complex activities...you can teach it...just about anything...and the more you teach, the easier it learns. Trick training is a fun activity to do with your dog, it uses mental energy the same as training traditional obedience behaviors does, it helps build a bond between dog and handler and it gives the dog confidence.

Just FYI; since I don't post allot here and you don't really know me; the video and post was meant to be funny and entertaining. I do enjoy training my dog tricks (in addition to traditional obedience, agility, rally O, and just general good out in public manners); but I don't actually expect her to eat like that!!

My hounds minds are worked.. Guarding over night a local car shop 4 nights a week, guarding the home, dispatched on prey as well as daily exercise, training,etc..

I'm glad you don't expect her to eat like that.....

I'm actually very interested in Schutzhund; would love to get involved one day if I can make the commitment in terms of time and training; and of course aquire a dog mentally suited to the task (my girl is very reactive and has fear issues; so she would be a disasterous "protection" dog)- maybe when I retire.

I have heard mentioned that Schutzhund is more of a sport and that PP dogs are trained differently. Do you do any type of similar training for guarding the shop? Are the dogs meant to be a deterrent on presence alone, are they trained to perform a specific behavior (if they are alone then I would imagine it would be to "attack"; because a bite and hold would be pretty useless) or trusted to do whatever comes naturally?

Didn't mean to go off on a tangent; but any kind of "training" in general I'm interested in.

Thank you! For a while there I thought no one was going to see the humor!

I like to always be teaching her something...so I'm trying to think of what to work on next.

I'm thinking visual targets - looking right/left on command. Not as flashy; but useful. I won't get a cool video out of that one.

I thought it was brilliant, as it shows just how intelligent this breed is and how trainable they are. Great Job!

I think after I do basic Target training with Jud, I will attempt this as an intermediate move LOL! I'm glad you showed how you did it. And If you get the V girl to move left or right on command I want to see that too! I know it wont be as flashy but I love your training vids.

I agree; I am continually surprised by the things I can train her to do!!

It's one thing to tap into a dogs natural instincts, like engaging their prey or defense drive; but I think it's a testament to their intelligence and adaptability to be able to train them to do something that is completely unnatural to them.

Oh hey hon! Little tidbit if you are going to train it, that I don't think was clear in the video; start off using your arm to have the dog target with it's paws then transition to a table or another object. For some reason, as you can see in the video; the transition from my arm to the table was the most difficult for her. (Also wear thick long sleeves, you won't realize your dog is scratching the shit out of your arm until you finish and look down and see you're a bloody mess )

Here's our very first practice; it started out as "say your prayers" which is what I was following the instructions for; then I decided to tweak it.
(I also had to do a little work with "sit pretty" because she had no "balance" and she was putting ALL her weight on my arm. Like hanging on for dear life, lol!)

Awwwwww!!!!! I love it!!! Seriously one of the curtesy videos I've seen in a while thank you so much for posting. This brought back some good old memories when we were kids my sister and I had a tabby Manx cat named Miss Kitty. We had a little fold up chair and table we used to set up just like that to feed her
Tick training is so much fun and your right, it does help them create a better bond I have found this to be true with cats as well we do trick training with our little tabby male and he's slowly turned into the best little cat I've ever had. Right now the cat is almost as far as the dog with his tricks he sits, speaks, sits pretty, dances and one of his favorite things to do is play fetch

Thanks! I have fun learning to "communicate" with her, and it's very cool to watch her mind working.
