OK maybe i missed this when i've been scannin thru but all the "how to"s that i can find for crate training are with younger pups. Boss, my foster dog, is 8 months-ish and i really need him to be crate trained i give him treats and make it a good place for him, i feed him, and make sure he doesnt get forced in. But its only been about 30hrs since i got him and he whines like a son of gun! im sorry maybe its normal, but dear Jesus.... even Odin looks at me like wtf?!

You just have to ignore it. If you yell at him or give him any type of attention when he whines he will learn that you'll come when called It's annoying, but he'll get the idea with time.

yeah, its very annoying. i just took a buncha treats and tried to get him more used to goin in and staying on his own. but when i shut the door even with me in the same room as him he goes crazy and even was biting at the bars.

Cain's Mom

Cain did that for a while we we first got him. He occasionally will still do it because he isn't ready for bed and wants to play when myself an husband are ready for bed haha! We had to ignore Cain the best we could. We made sure he was comfy and had a warm blanket. He got rewarded for going in the kennel. Lots of love when let out. Now if I say time for bed he walks right in and waits for the kennel to be shut. He was easy though!

I'm sure Odin sleeps with you in bed but one thing that always calmed Cain down when we were crate training was Sheba, our blue heeler mix, would go lay right in front of his kennel. It's something she started on her own and Cain wouldn't cry when she was there. And he has always Been around his litter mates so i think he just wanted someone right there! Not sure if you could move his crate closer to your bed so he knows you're not far or so he can see Odin. I know that Sheba was my life saver when it came to training for us!

I had to crate train Sheba too, and she's 4 when I started. But you don't want my advice on that one haha. She was Houdini and could escape so that was a long road

well yeah Odin likes to either sleep with me or on the couch. but even when i was workin with Boss last night, he would still whine even when i was sitting in front of the kennel.

but we had a lil break thru this morning! i grabbed his food bowl, filled it set it on top of his crate and took off the prong... i went and set it on the table and when i came back he was waiting for me in his crate! although hes done eatting and whining now but still! he was in by himself!
