Pup Gets Excited And Nips! Help!
I have a 4 1/2 month old pup, he is crated at night and restrained using a run during the day... always has fresh water, and fed on a schedule 3 times daily. Of course if he is out there alone for a few hours or so when I go out to play fetch or to walk him he gets excited and licks/nips (playfully) at my face... other times it is almost as if he is pissed at me for not being with him 24/7 like I would like to be... someone, anyone... please help.

it could just be puppy mouthing it is normal and they do grow out of it but it is annoying. so if you want it to stop im sure there are plenty of ways. what i think would work the best is everytime he nips you i know it sounds silly but yelp like a hurt dog this should stop the puppy and works with most puppies when they are with their litter mates and they play rough a and a puppy gets hurt the puppy will yelp to let the other puppy know it is playing to rough and it got hurt that puppy will stop playing like that.

My dogs are also in runs during the day when I am not at home.
Teach him no bite. I do NOT allow my dogs to lick/nip my face, personally its just gross I see what they do out in the yard. I've heard to make a loud high pitched ouch or yelp when they nip, its supposed to mimick what another puppy would do when they are getting too rough and make them stop.
Also are you holding him when he does this or does he jump up to lick/nip...may want to start with teaching him to stay down also.

Thanks for your help everyone, I'm going to throw some ball with him right now and I will try your advice.
p.s. I know this sounds crazy but sometimes when I kneel, and he is sitting he lunges... but I have been known to pick him up sometimes to give him a hug. lol
as far as staying down, what I've been doing is as soon as he puts his paws on my lap (if I'm sitting) I put him on the ground and say no! no matter how many times it takes.
this site has helped with all the questions I've had, whether trivial or serious and I can't thank everyone enough.

Also wanted to add you really can't expect a pup that is not getting enough exercise during the day to be calm in my opinion. Puppies need both mental and physical stimulation which is why as you tire him out he is most likely much better behaved . Also obedience training should start asap if you haven't. you might also want to look into starting some puppy agility with him:

I know it is hard working and caring for a pup. Most of us have to do it that way.
LOL I wish I could be a stay at home dog mommy , but unless I win the lottery it isn't going to happen

Use "Down" instead of just No. Better to have different commands so they know what action to actually -do- as opposed to it just being something bad!
Also maybe get a bigger run so he can excersize in it.

Thank you everyone for your advice once again, I have a confession... at times I get so frustrated with myself because I ask myself is he going to misbehave like this forever? Is this behavior "burned" into his psyche? Could/can I do something better? I'm so lost at times and I'm really beating myself up over this. I'm trying so hard and I want to stress that he isn't like this all of the time, I have no idea.
Sincerely,
Mike and Primo

Welcome to Pit Bull Ownership 101. Many get overwhelmed and frustrated before learning how to handle puppy antics. You need to take a step back, and know it will get better when you train and work with him and never get angry while training. Read through the link I posted and the advice everyone gives, ask a lot of questions and enjoy the puppy don't stress.
Properly bred APBTs have a ton of drive and energy. As an owner you will learn with the pup how to channel it.
You may want to look into doing some formal obedience class to help you out.

Can someone please help me as well. Noah (thats my 10 week old puppies name) also nips and when he is excited. We have been trying the yelp method it doesn't seem to be working. Is this normal behavior for puppies as this is our first dog.

Its natural puppy behavior. You just have to reprimand and be firm. It happens all the time in litters, usually until mom snaps back and puts an end to it. You must be "mom" and snap back. Once they learn its not acceptable it will get better.
