michigan agility???

rudi is only 4 months as of now, but I'm one to get a jump on what I plan on doing... I really want to get her into agility when she's older and I've been looking around for a reputable place to go to in Michigan but the closest place that I could find was in Warren, MI... i think it was called like Sportsmens or something, I saw their routines at the detroit kennel club show back in february... but the problem is earlier this week there was a proposal in Warren, MI to ban pitbulls and I'm not sure how that went, but regardless I'm not sure how I feel about taking my pitties up to Warren IMO....

I was just wondering if anybody knows of any places around here in Michigan or the upper Ohio area.... anything would be appreciated! thanks

One place I saw that could be good is The canine work shop. It does not say what the accomplishments of the trainer's are in agility but it looks better than sportsmens. I was not impressed at all by the accomplishments of the trainers at sportsmens. If you are going to pay good money to go to a class, at least be taught by someone who has done big things with their dogs. Sorry for me a MACH from AKC says nothing, look for high USDAA or NADAC titles.
The Canine Workshop's Home Page

My suggestion is to contact this club and ask who they recommend as an agility trainer in your area. They are a local MI agility club and the best place to find a trainer. Good luck I hope you read all the sticky's in this forum, some good info for a pup. Start young, and start now with a puppy agility class. I start them as soon as they have all their shots.

rudi just got her last shots yesterday so I will definitely look into it!! I thought Sportsmens was nice, but I don't really know much about agility since I've never had a dog to do it with before, so thanks for the information! I will definitely check out the canine workshop RIGHT NOW!

Hello,
Rita Tyler teaches at this place:
Meet our Instructors
She may only have AKC Mach agility title , but her dog has the UDX, which (IMO) is the hardest obedience title to earn, period. She has also competed Nationally at many AKC events. She is also open minded to pit bulls, which many trainers are not. I am sure this trainer is more than qualified to teach basic agility to a newbie.

I am sorry I didn't post this link for you. This is the link to the MI agility club that hold trials. I think they can recommend some great trainers in your area.
Welcome To The Up 'N Over Agility Club of Southeast Michigan

That one trainer that Howard mentioned is from Sportsmen I think and yes a UDX is a title to be very proud of, it takes a ton of hard work. But I just came from an AKC trial that our club was putting on and really the competition with the exception of a few was pathetic. Not to say this trainer is not more than qualified but I would look for someone with more diversity. If I am going to give a recommendation for a trainer I would want to make sure I am giving you the best info I can. I want to see more APBT's do agility ( I need some good competition ) and I would want you to learn from the best in your area. A student is only as good as their teacher and since you cannot compete in AKC (unless you call your dog a mixed breed but there are plenty of venues for a APBT) I feel you would do better with a trainer that has more experience on other venues. Each venue is totally different and if you only trail in AKC style courses you might have a hard time in another venue. So yes Sportsmen might be a great place to have fun with your dog but I would look at this other agility club and see if you can find somewhere with multiple trainers with multiple titles in different venues. You have a young dog so you have plenty of time to find what you are looking for, what ever you decide. You should also go check out the local agility events that can be found on the link I just posted.
Good luck!!

Thanks so much!! I would love to be your competition haha!! I've never really competed or trained any of my pets for anything since I've never had a dog that actualy had drive that I could tunnel into anything. Rudi is extremely eager to please, very driven and has tons of energy. I think she is completely perfect, and on top of that she is just a total sweetheart and loves people. I e-mailed both places in search of somewhere to go, so I'm hoping to get some good responses!!
