Ohio new BSL win defeated by County law just passed

So, yesterday went to take the boys out real quick and find huge stack of papers with a city notice on my door step. She never knocked, just dropped off the complaint.

Apparently the night before at the town meeting they passed laws regarding pits. Though they aren't considered vicious unless they have a history of attacking, all pits must be handled as though they are, meaning I can't even have my dogs in my yard without a leash.

This is all crap but according to the notice, "annonymous" persons complained that 2 pits were "at large" in my neighborhood. My boys are NEVER out without one of us and NEVER have bothered anyone. But the descriptions were close enough to be correct and they attached a copy of the law that passed the previous evening.

I called to discuss the issue but am not getting a call back. I don't want this citation on record as it is completely fictitious and I fear they are simply establishing history of issue to have a case against us down the road. I am aware this sounds paranoid, but this is a tiny town well known to be corrupt on many levels for years. I wouldn't have imagined it would touch us, I am an overly responsible pet owner, we are fully vetted, completely socialized, hell.....I even have the little bag holder thing attached to our leashes so we pick up our poop when we are out walking. I don't understand.

you own "pit" type dogs, and most people ignorant and unwilling to learn.

I would absolutely think they were setting up the case to have your dogs set as "viscous", if the law has been effect less than 24 hours.

But we don't bother anyone, the neighbors who's property touches ours all know the boys are rescues and speak to them by their names daily. I havent' had any complaints or conflict of any kind with anyone here so why target my dogs?

Maybe this will all just go away since we haven't broken any laws and absolutely comply with whatever is dictated but I kind of feel like I need to find an attorney just in case....which is stupid because I would rather spend that money saving other dogs, not arguing with stupid humans.

That doesn't matter. The laws were passed. If you're not getting a response, you need to be proactive and find out who to talk to by going down in person to speak with someone. Take your vet records with you, and any training records/certificates, etc. to ensure you can prove your dogs have not caused any issues. Most things like this usually do slip in under the radar, unless you're active in your community when it comes to potential laws being passed. Best of luck to you on getting somewhere with this, and please keep us posted.

I agree, get ahead of it now while you have a chance before anything happens. Call them find out what they are meaning and clarify the newly passed law. I don't see anything wrong with having a dog leashed in a yard, unless its fenced in. Are they asking you to leash him in a fenced in yard? What else was passed? for all breeds or specific breeds only?
