BITE SLEEVE!

What are your guys thoughts on a bite sleeve for work outs? Is this something that can be used as a toy or does it ruin a dog for further schutzhund training in the future? Does this project aggressive behavior on humans? Its not like people are walking around with big bite sleeves on huh?

I was looking at ones online for about $80 and they looked so very cool. It looked like grizz would get a real kick out of something like that.

All opinion are welcome thanks for you help!!!

This is the sleeve i was looking at incase you were wondering. it is "middle of the road" cost.

I'd use one for sure. I work mine by hand anyway so it really wouldn't change much from the dog's perspective.

I dunno...it really depends on the dog and your ultimate plans for it. I personally don't like the idea. Even when training for Schutzhund the actual amount of time spent on a sleeve is very brief, and mental stability and control are kept in check. It is merely a reward for correct behavior. If I were gonna do something like that for exercise or fun I would use a springpole with some burlap or a flirtpole. JMO

hey!! yeah like syd said, when kenya is in shutz they dont wok with the sleeve that much... once kenya goes to teh PD training, alot of it will be sleeve and fat suites, but for now its not.... sorry i dont have much experience with it lol.... bt i think u should just enroll him in shutz, and have the trainer work with him and the sleeve...

my ultimate plans for him are doing sch training, weight pull, cgc, therapy work, maybe agility... He's got a long healthy life ahead so I want him to be well rounded. I don't wanna send mixed messages to grizz I thought he might like the "wrestling with dad" aspect of it... Thanks Syd!

Hello,
I would not suggest it. I would suggest, going to a reputable SchH trainer, and have them teach you some helper work, if you are interested in SchH or other dogsport. Teaching your own dog to bite an armsleeve without proper training can give the dog bad habits, if you decide to get serious about the sport later. You can accidentally give the dog bad bites on the sleeve, and cause grip problems (shallow biting, targetting problems, and even tooth damage). I would suggest using a tug made from jute, and playing that way. For instance, let the dog bite the tug, when he is full and calm let him have it (carry it).

If you are possibly interested in Schutzhund, go to a club without your dog, and ask if you can learn about schutzhund, and possibly learn how to do "helper" work. Go several times without a dog, don't talk a lot, and when your bring your dog demonstrate that he has obedience training. Most clubs are not bull-breed friendly, but respect a person who comes out to learn and listen.

I also always suggest seeing an experienced dog trainer who has titled his own dogs in the sport that you are interested in. Even if you have to pay private training fees at first, to get started. You can un-knowlingly teach your dog a lot of bad habits, that will be very hard to fix, if you decide to go further.

A bite sleeve is not meant to be a toy ... If you want to use one with your dog it should be used properly in shutz training with a good trainer who has exp working with apbt's ... JMO
