Putting weight around dogs neck

Is this a good or bad thing. I really have no clue but have viewed it as kind of cruel forcing a dog to walk around all day having weight tied to his neck, I guess to help build neck and chest muscles or something I don't know..

Am I right about this, is it nonsense or is there anything good behind it?

I wouldn't do it personally. If you want to weight train your dog I would use a vest that's more centered....and I wouldn't do it till the dog is atleast 11 months to 13 months old.

The weight around the neck does cause neck issues...I mean as a human do you train your neck? I don't.

Yea i figured it was a bad practice by not so great owners.

You can get weighted collars from stillwater. Proper use of weights is what matters, to much weight or having it on to long can seriously damage your dog.

I found doing " road work" { speed walking 2 - 3miles 2xs a day} has really built up the muscle tone in our males. If your dog doesnt have a "bully build" to begin with the weights are not going to " muscle up' the neck. Consistant exercise { using weight vests} and a high protein , high quality diet will bring out the best in your dog. Our RE female { she's about 45 pounds } does her "body building" by playing ball. If your dog has a strong ball drive then I found this works to build up the chect and back muscles. Take 2 tennis balls. Throw 1 high in the air . After the dog catches and drops it throw the second one in fast sucsession. Keep this up for 10 to 15 mins the day and then increase the time . I keep increasing the time until the dog gets tired. My dog can do it for 25 - 30mins . By then i'm pooped and and my back hurts from picking up tennis balls off the floor - but its great exercize for your abs!!!

Yea i do road walks twice a day, usually 1-2.5 miles, and play fetch multiple times a day while out in the backyard just messing around. I've already noticed muscle build up in her chest and front legs from just doing this. Shes about 7 months now.

I do. a strong neck is an important part of a strong shoulder girdle, and will help hold alot of things in place under strain. given this ideology, it would make sense to train your dogs neck, along with anything else though this does involve some common sense, start small, dont attach a 10lb weight to fidos collar, but chain maybe a good tool for this, it comes in various gages which you can increase over time.

do you NEED to weight train specifically your dogs neck? maybe, maybe not. anything to strengthen your dog, or yourself for that matter, in an attempt to increase "durability" cant really be bad. in moderation of course.

Hey Aidan
In one word-NO.It can cause severe neck and spine damage. The only way to strenghten the neck is like what have been said here---weighted and balanced west.Or introduce your dog to weight pulling.Wait untill 12-13 months or so,you want the bones and muscle's to be in place first.
Thank you,
Henry

when i played football it was part of our circuit. helps with the headaches i got from when i first start wearing a helmet every season.

it actually does work but you have to wait untill your dog is fully grown and can handle it, it makes they're neck and shoulders buff the f**k out but you're only supposed to put it every other day and only when they're being active i use a 6 foot chain and my dogs actually like it but the only bad thing is it makes their neck green if you leave it on for to long and if you put it on wile they puppies makes the front part not grow as much so they look lop sided.you just have to know wat you're doing but works great

There are different views on this subject, and i believe, like many here, that it is a matter of moderation.

Neck Weight training for an hour or 2 a day, Thats fine...But some people feel that if they keep their dog on a chain and put padlocks on it for weight, It will strengthen up the neck...This is abuse and will do nothing but harm the dog.

Never start with too much weight, and never leave it on for more than a few hours a day. If you choose to do this properly, Than you will have beautiful muscle tone and structure in the neck...If you don't do it properly, You will cause permanent and serious damage to the dog.
