Savannah has a really high fetch drive, so I play frisbee with her for about 10-15 minutes 3 to 4 times a day. I've been doing it for about a month now and her stamina has increased, she can go for about 30 minutes non stop now without flopping over, and her chest and shoulder muscles have gotten larger and more toned.

Runs and walks build more muscle leaner than most people realize. You can drag weight as well. Many times its more about conditioning, finding the muscles the dog already has hidden under their extra skin.

Hand walking, fetch, spring pole, flirt pole, drag weight. All can build stamina as well as work your dog.

3 mile walk no less than 5 days of the week. ( depending on weather and tide hour)

Half way ( 1.5 miles) they get either 5-15 minute run on the beach with jumping up to catch a stick that is held ( on sand, not too high a jump) for my 7 month old.

My 13 month Rottie gets water fetch ( no excessive running or jumping for him...he's recovering from Pano)

later in the day ( after 3 hours of rest), stair exercise ( carpeted stairs) , last about 5-10 minutes.

once a day 5-15 minute tug of war. ( sometimes combined with fetch, always drop it command is utilized)

I am looking into documenting this exercise and diet regime to be evaluated by members here.

I mill (carpetmill) my two pits 5 mins a day, closer to their first pulls it will end up being 15 mins, drag weight with the working harness till their pull harness comes on their pull sled for about 10-30 mins depending on the day, hand walks for an hour each night and flirt/spring pole for 15 mins each night after the walk so far so good Yuna is starting too look great Also I only feed once a day at bedtime just so they don't have a full tummy while working.

When I started working on Vendetta's stamina she would only go for 10 minutes before wanting to lay down. A year later I can NOT wear her out. She will play fetch for hours at a time. I have started taking her to the beach and adding swimming to her excerise regimine. I also found a good hill that we are going to start working out on. Actually I'm adding both of these in hopes that we don't have go as long and she will tire out but it will probably back fire on me and make her go longer.

i tell you, i have no other choice but to tire these rascals out early. we head out usually first thing after we put our morning faces on.
after the long walk and high energy in between, they are so good throughout the day.
i dont allow zoomie zoom zoom in the house, when they start looking like they might get frisky with each other i let them play tug of war while i closely supervise. The rules are very strict and theyve learned to follow it to a tee.
1- No touching each other, no play biting, not even licking during tug of war.
2- stay on the designated carpet ( the ring) in the bedroom. should they get off, which they sometimes do, i just call them back onto the carpet.
rule number one being broken gets the end of TOW and time out.

i remember posting about TOW , whether i should allow them to play with each other, and got different answers. I stopped temporarily because of this, their size difference and Nina was toothing, now they are happily back on it. Its a great way to get them to stop pay fighting in the house. I think i have a vid somewhere.

Tyson sometimes gets bored, never Nina, she could play anything all day long.
I need to go back to more obedience again, ive been slacking in that dept and just doing the physical, and i shouldnt. Mikado, i think it might have been you defending ( or merely stating your stance on the labrador, which is getting a bad rap in Holly's thread), and you nailed it when you said a lab that is exercised properly has almost no issues . Same with our pits, or any dog for that matter.

....great thread.
