few questions...

i've been playin fetch with lacey lots lately and yesterday a few things crossed my mind... i know when humans play sports they are supposed to warm up first and stretch- is this the same for dogs! we literally play fetch for an hour sometimes two up to a couple times a day and go for about a mile walk once or twice a day.

so my question is this- could she get hurt playin fetch? should i change somethin around? i don't really know how else to work her out and weight pull as fun as it sounds isn't really an option right now... i will start flirtin her but i'm waitin on the rope i wanna use n yeah.

she is down to 2 cups of food a day and lookin good. muscle is lookin tons better in the last month of exercise. we go out and play most every day except when it rains. i HATE rain and she doens't really like it either. that was my other question- is it ok for her to work out in the rain? i know there are higher chances of her slippin and stuff and bein cold and wet- are there higher chances for her to get injured that way as far as muscles and tendons are concerned? or do i need to get over it n work her out in the rain anyhow? was thinkin about pneumonia too but i dunno enough about doggy health to know if thats a real issue or not...

another question not really related to lacey or conditioning but i'll throw it out there anyhow- so george doesn't really understand the concept of fetch. he plays outside with lace and just runs back and forth following her when i throw the ball and 9 times out of 10 she gets it and brings it back. the 1 time that he gets it, he just stands in place with it. refuses to come when i call. literally i have to go get the ball. i've put him on a lead before and played with just him and pulled him to me when he got the ball when i call him. then tried again off lead and he still doesn't get it. i want to have him on a long lead but was wondering- they make retractable leashes go up to like 50 ft and are made for big dogs like up to 110 pounds. think it would be sturdy enough to use as a long lead? i don't ever throw the ball that far for him i just get frustrated with him and me gettin caught up in a lead long enough for him to actually leave my feet for the ball. besides playin with him on a lead- any other ideas how to teach him to bring the ball back instead of just stand over it or chew it? of all the commands he knows- he responds to "drop" the fastest. a few times he will "bring it here." all the rest he just walks away with the ball. i hate fetching my own balls n lace is a usually a lady when somebody else fairly got to the ball first. ugh.

Sorry becca..i can't be of much help here... i never really worked my dogs out.. just walked em and let em play naturally, so I'm interested to hear what others have to say on this topic as well. Best of luck to you!

can dogs get heart playing fetch? yes. but dont not play fetch on that risk. torn ACL's are a common thing to see because of the the hard turns, stops and cornering trying to get the ball.
nismo has been on crate rest for hurt legs a few times from playing fetch. but right now i dont have the room to have him drag sleds. so as playing fetch is the best thing i can work into my schedule sometimes, thats what you have to run with to make sure your dogs are happy. the risk of injury isnt big enough for me not to play fetch.
know what i mean?

So I usually walk Dooney around the block before play or working him. I taught him to play fetch the same way with a log lead and treats when he brought it back i gave him treat. Eventually i took the lead away. and just treats now I just give treats once and a while. I also red an old Dogman book that said they would rub the dog dog with a wet towel after doing hard work to keep them from getting injured. So know after drag sled and long running I do that.

somehow fetch clicked in george's head last night. i think he was getting upset that he only got to 1 in 10 throws that he thot he needed to save the ball. hahaha. he got it a few times last night and kept bringin it back like a champ.

@ niz- i don't mean to say i'm not gonna play fetch with her- just wondered if we should be doing a warm up first like walkin or somethin less strenuous that may decrease the chances of injury?

any comments on working in the rain as far as health wise?

I always warm my dog up before a work out. I spend about 15 minutes of walking and playing fetch as a warm up. Then we work for about a 1 hour straight or more depending on the day. But I think your fine in what your doing now. Yes your dog can get hurt playin fetch, but I don't think you really have to worry about warming your dog up to play fetch.
