Without seeing it, it's hard to judge, but 100 gallons seems small. I have a 90 gal fish tank, and I am using that to judge the size.

I reckon great minds think alike. I was thinking about doing something like this for mable, since EBs can't actually swim, I was thinking about busting out a little taller kiddy pool and make her walk around in it.

I had thoughts about building something like this a few years ago. My idea was to put a beam of some sort across the top from which a chain would suspend and clip to a harness on the dog. It would keep them swimming in place and also keep them afloat. At least that was my idea. Never actually went through with it.

i was thinking the same thing, thats the same hook up i have for my e mill. one thing i am really wondering is if it would be crucial to put some kind of water pump into the tank to have a current to swim against.

if i can get a tank for under 100 bucks i believe its well worth it!!!

Wayne how are you going to make him walk in it. I would think you would need somekind of treadmill on the bottom.

i don't know but i don't think it will work very well. JMO

i would think that if he is suspended in the water to where his legs are not touching the bottom he will tread the water... as in swim. i could be wrong though

I have seen swim tanks, and usually the dog wears a life jacket that is attached to something suspended above, that way they stay afloat. I have seen shallow ones with mills, or something they walk on the bottom, but also ones where they just float and swim. It's my impression they naturally doggie paddle when there's nothing under their feet, but I could be wrong.

My experience with Vendetta this year at the swimming hole was she would panic when her feet didn't touch the bottom. She took in water everytime i through the ball out too far.

i also though he would naturally swim when his feet did not touch the bottom. i see what your saying sharon, he also flipped out when i put him on e mill. we worked threw it and he realized he was ok and not going to die. as long as he is suspend in the air and not able to drown he will have to work threw the panic mode.

Okay Wayne let me ask you something. Do you work through your panic mode? You understand what is going on around you yet we all panic most people will not work though it. I wouldn't put my animal through that i think it could do long lasting damage.

Why do you want to do this to him?

His dog (Wayne's)has past injuries. Swimming is the safest exercise for joints and tendons. It is a non-impact aerobic activity. Many horse racers use giant swim tanks to rehabilitate their hoses after an injury. Many pet owners that own elderly horses also go to facilites where swim tanks are used, if they can afford it. For the same purpose: to strengthen muscles, improve cardiovascular helath, and NOT damage joints, or tendons.

Many things stress "some" dogs or make them panic. A good trainer or owner will try to work through it. if done humanely, with patience and in steps, it works.

Yes, hand walking may be easier for the dog, but to get a dog in shape just handwalking, you almost can't work a full time day job. Treadmills are nice, but can also injure a dog. Springpoles and flirt-poles are fun, but can also injure a dog easily. A swim tank is a great idea, if you are handy with tools or know someone who can make one.

Here is a commercial one, Quite rpicey, but you get the idea.
