Question Skateboarding?

Is there anyone here who skateboards with their dog? If so, how did you introduce it? Was it easy or difficult? Does your dog enjoy it?

My pup is about 7 months and we go for walks, jogs, and go to the park so I can let him off leash and run around as much as he wants. When we go jogging, he goes at a pretty good pace and usually stays a whole leash length in front of me.

So I picked up a cheap skateboard and thought I'd try having him pull me around. I think itd be a good way to work him out, build cardio and muscle developement.

We tried it this morning and I think it was a success! For the first 50ft or so, he wasn't sure what to make of this thing I was standing on that was rolling towards him, but he seemed to get it and took off. We went around my block about 5 times (I would guess a mile at the most) and got some cheers from a group of 7yr olds being walked to school by a couple moms.

I think I'll keep trying this with my boy and keep the distance low like today until he's grown a bit more.

Thoughts?

x2 I have my dog pull me on my mountain bike and I pray everytime before we start to make sure I come home in one piece. I can only imagine how scary it is with a skateboard lol

I would have treats for the dog and just roll the skateboard around by it self so he can get used to the noise. If he gets used to the noise of it you should be ok, but this can take couple of repitions of getting him used to the sounds.

PS Good luck and wear some pads lol

Thanks for the advice David! I actually did roll it around in front of him before we started and he couldn't care less about it haha. But as soon as we start, he would go about 10ft, turn around, squat down and have this "What IS that thing following me??" look on his face haha. He just did it a few times and then seemed to figure it out. I think he enjoyed running at his own speed too much to care about the skateboard.

Haha and I was actually pretty close to eating it one time to. I was making a right hander, but Whit decided to go left and I had to jump off the board lol

I think that's why I chose a skateboard over a bike, atleast I KNOW I'll land on my feet when I jump off the board lmao

I skate my boy Dosia. I started him off very very young going really slow so he could stay right beside the board. When he got bigger he started to pull. We have a very good system down now. He knows when I move his leash to one side it means were turning. That's one thing I would start doing right now is direction commands like left right and slow down. Also make sure the dog has a comfortable harness and don't use a regular collar for pulling. It may not seem to bother them but they can injure the neck pretty easily.

Thanks kg, I will try the direction and stop commands and start implementing them tomorrow when we do it again.

On a side note, it totally popped in my head right now and is a little off topic. But how long after eating should I excercise my boy? I've noticed that if I take him on a jog to the park so he can run after eating, he seems to poop rather quickly. Is this because of the amount of activity he's doing? Is it bad? I just don't want to stress him and I've been meaning to ask.

Yeah, I agree on watching out for cats haha. The whole time Whitman was pulling me, I was constantly scanning on cat, people and dog patrol haha.

We just had a street around the corner from me that just got paved and is still very smooth, we end up getting the most speed down that street. I'm wondering how fast he'll be when full grown haha

um... it gets scary. so when the dog is grown WATCH out for cats in dogs and train your dog not to be easily distracted.
have a route already mapped out, but switch it up, they get bored of the same old thing
