No interest in spring pole.... What to do?

Hi all. Despite various rigs and various things for her to grab and hold, my bitch shows no interest in a spring pole set up. I basicly have around 8 feet of rope hanging of the garage ceiling with a spring at the very top. AT the other end, I have tried bones, sailing rope, sticks, dried leather, tug of war ropes...... Nothing interests her.

She just sort of looks at it with no interest. I have tried all the usual stuff like doing tug of war first and then putting the rope onto the spring pole but again, she just stares at it and walks off.

She is a 8 month old bitch. Any tips would be welcome!

Thanks so much

Matt

Have you tried doing a flirt pole with her? Maybe a spring pole just isn't her style.

Roxie loves the spring pole, really rips into it and tries to destroy it. But my boy Kane prefers the flirt pole -- he'll go after the spring pole if I wiggle it, but he's not one to keep going after it otherwise. I wasn't surprised when I discovered this because when we play tug, Roxie's always been the kind of dog to never let go, even when she's exhausted, unless I tell her to drop it, whereas Kane will grab it, hold on, and then drop it to re-adjust his grip, rinse, later, repeat.

Some dogs just don't. I have 3 out of 8 that will use the SP.

age may have alot to do with it. leave it alone for awhile until you see
your pup become a dog. I've had pups (under 14 mo old) that showed no interest
in the spring pole, and others take right to it. you can't make a dog do anything
it doesn't want to do...as far as excelling in certain activities. i would try
the flirt-pole with a cow hide attached,...once the dog gets "hooked" after time,
you can put it anywhere and the dog should be willing to "work".

you can get hides from stillwater but he's on back-order right now.

i use two things as bate for onyx he is close to 9mo. but as the gang said before, cow hide. i use hide as one of the bates. he hits it harder and more of a frenzy game. i have to yank the chain a bit from time to time to keep him focused, or he will try to chew the hide.

have you tried to change locations? she may not be familiar with the garage, or get her more familiar with the garage buy some training or games inside the garage

good point, thats true as well, she might be freaked out with being boxed in,
and with sound being much more condensed, especially if the equipment is making
alot of unfamiliar noises that would make a dog skittish.

well done oo/sc.

I would work on tug of war with your dog. Most dogs love that then you could start pulling her up so her front feet are off the ground then set her back down again. This will get her use to jumping to get her toy.

Vendetta doesn't care for a spring pole but she loves the flirt pole and a good game of tug ...if I can rember not to say "give it to me" then she drops it and walks away.

good call mikado!!! if i cant get onyx outside i will use a well known tug toy and pull him so only his hind legs are on the ground and then "bounce" the toy almost like a springing action so it simulated a "spring pole" feeling. she may not like the recoil of the spring yanking her up towards the cwiling. if your using a spring try different spring rates to get that comfortable feeling for her. if she isnt being competative against the spring she may get a defeated feeling and may not want to play with it knowing she isnt going to get anywhere

Our female pit, showed no interest at first either, although she quickly became beyond obessesd. She had a thing for the noise of squeaky toys. So we cut open the inner tube of tire and placed a small squeaky toy inside and squeeked it when she was nearby. She came running and once she realized that biting the inner tube equaled the noise she was hooked. Then we added a string toy to the set up as well. In her fury she would sometimes go for the string toy but never at first. Once she got used to biting the string toy we took the inner tube off the setup. Now she just goes straight for the string.
