Treadmill Starter

Hey guys I was just wondering what should I do for starting on a treadmill?

-How long the first,second,third,etc.. time?

-Should I hand walk my dog to cool him off?

-Change his diet since he will be doing more work then before?

and any other info I need to know about treadmill conditioning...

Hi, I am guessing you mean a regular human treadmill right? First ALWAYS take your dog out to the bathroom BEFORE you go on the treadmill (I have heard some horror stories!! ew lol) . Start by getting your pup used to the treadmill, give it a name, make him get on it and reward him, don't turn it on just yet. on a human mill I tie a leash loose enough for him to be able to move back and forth, but not loose enough so if he loses his footing he will slid off the back of it. NEVER leave your dog unattended while on the treadmill.

I warm my boy up for 5 minutes slow walk, then run him for 10, fast pace walk for 5, run for 10 and then fast walk for 5 until I can tell he is done and wants to get off. Sometimes we go for an hour sometimes a half hour, depends on his mood and how he is doing. I put my boy on the treadmill to lose weight, so it depends on HOW much you are working your boy if you adjust his food. Are you just doing it for fun or for training? If its cold like around me in the winter you use the treadmill more and are outside less so I never adjusted my boys food.

Here is lesson one with my boy, I was slow, didn't want to scare him and just a constant reward and praise praise praise:

Day 2:

This is him more recently, no reward until he is done so he doesn't choke or anything while on it. My treadmill is old, this is on full speed, lol.

Hope that helped, let me know if you have any questions!

WOW! First off beautiful dog! Also, thanks for all the information! It is kind of training. I usually jog with him for like an hour or two everyday but with school back I really can't find the time. So I want to keep his build. I'm not sure if i'll change his diet just yet. I'll see how it goes and determine then. Had me laughing at the bathroom stories :P.

How many times should I practice getting him on the treadmill?

hey thank you, I love him so much! and no problem! I think you would be good with the food and just see how he is looking as you progress. I turned it on after about 2 days, I would tell him treadmill and take him over to it and reward him a few times an hour on night, but the next day when I said treadmill he ran in, jumped on and that was my queue. I think you will be able to tell from your boys body language and attitude when he is ready. Some may take longer to get comfortable on it, your boy might only take a few times. Now wherever treadmill is mentioned my boy runs to the room its in and hops on and waits for me cause I was not moving fast enough for him.

The only thing that I found to be leery of was paw rubbing. In the beginning I didn't pick up on my boys queues that he was done and he tried to put the breaks on himself and rubbed his pad kinda raw. I am sure if you follow his lead you will know. The key of course is just don't scare him and let him know how awesome you think he is for doing it
