The first step would be to determine what your pup weighs now, and find a target weight to get down to. Obviously, it would be a minor amount of weight loss, to start, as you don't want your dog to look starved. Say maybe 3-5 lbs less than he is right now.

I would start by assessing what kind of food you feed, and amount he's fed, and maybe reduce his feed by 1/2 cup each feeding (if you feed twice a day), or 3/4 cup if you feed once a day. Instead of just random walks around the neighborhood or local park, or where ever you walk at, I would increase the length of the walk, and the pace at which you walk. Don't just take some leisure stroll while he does his business, speed it up a bit, power walk until you get to a point where neither you nor him are winded or short of breath when finished. Then you can begin a light jog for, say, half the distance of your walk. You have to build his stamina up first, to be able to endure the cardio work out.

Start with answering on how much he's fed and how much he weighs, and distance of your daily walk, and we'll go from there.

Get you some butcher cuts, or some frozen Bil Jac.. Use it as a supplement.

walk your dog twice a day for 30 minutes using a 16ft long lead; they sale trail leads in the dog department at sporting goods stores. OR make one Add time.. and distance.. every two weeks till you reach the goal you want. If your running with your dog you won't over run him, thats for sure. SWIMMING! every other day or every day with a day off is GREAT!! ..

Good luck and best of wishes.

a great start would be to make a flirt pole. cheap and very effective. have you ever looked into spring poles? What I have started to do is have my dog pull a milk jug filled with rocks for about 20 minutes in the field by my house. when I see she is slowing down, I walk for 5 more minutes then take it off and walk home (about 1/2 mile away). Thats a good place to start. The less work you have to do and the more your dog has to do is best! I have made a weekly routine of what I do with Roxy. Sure it changes depending on unpredictable plans in the day, but one day i will do a 3 mile walk with interval slow jogging along with flirt pole work. Another day will be all pulling work (spring pole, tug of war, pulling the milk jug at the field), another day will be swimming or jogging. I am still learning as well. I just have to start with this to get my dog in the right condition in order to add harder work in the near future.
