Follow Silas' Conditioning Progress

I thought I'd make a thread to follow Silas during his time getting conditioned. Now, he's a lazy boy so he doesn't like to do flirt pole or spring pole (I'm still trying to find something to entice him) but he LOVES long walks and playing fetch up and down our stairs. Aside from that, he plays in the yard with Kora and is now on TOTW supplemented with raw (mostly for the added moisture content and the bone factor) We're starting off light.
We'll be ordering a backpack for our walks to add a bit of extra weight and then later on a WP harness for when we're in the yard. I'd love to bike with him, but he always manages to knock me over on the bike -_-

Anyhow! Here are some shots of Silas so you can see his progress.
His photo at the animal control on his adoption day (You can't see very well from the photo but he was a bit under weight)

After being with us for two months. First day of Conditioning.

Second week of Conditioning. Starting with the long walks (4-5 miles) and now on his TOTW and raw.

And just a quick video of him on his walk, with a very good sit (his least favorite command)

I'm probably the only one who can see the subtle differences lol, but I mostly see them in his front legs and shoulders. Either way, I'm proud of how far he's come!
Also, feel free to comment on his structure. I'm going to try and get into showing (not him, of course) so anything to help me learn what to look for is always appreciated

wow to me his color even looks different after you brought him home.
good move on your part.
how is his 'prey drive' does he pull when you walk him?
if he does dont ever stop him from doing that, what happens is you break his spirit, once you've broken him there is no glue to put them back together, might as well get another one and start over again.

but as long as he's got some kind of prey drive you can work with that, find out what he likes and bait him into doing what you want with a little reward,
then before you know it no reward is needed just the praise from your voice will be good enuf.

good luck

Surfer - His prey drive is fantastic! About the pulling. He's a HUGE puller, and I knew from the start that I wanted to at least try to get him into WP. Either competitively or just for fun among friends. So, he's been taught that there's a time to pull and a time NOT to pull, specifically on walks lol. I've used the phrase "Lets Work" to trigger his pull drive. Works like a charm, I have the grass stains on my knees to prove it
As far baiting him, for flirt pole or spring pole (he hasn't needed bait to pull), he loves all sorts of things. Stuffed animals, bits of fur, kong toys, anything edible too. But it seems like once it's tied to to anything, he just wont go for it. I'm trying to transfer over the "lets work" trigger to those things as well to help him get started.

Princesspaola21 - Thank you very much!

I cannot wait for Kora to mature. She's a tenacious little thing and goes absolutely nuts for the spring pole and flirt pole. She's going to be a blast to work with.

Thank you!

The other day on our walk, I had a young guy approach me and ask if Si was friendly. I said yes, he proceeded to pet Si and call his girlfriend over. They were asking questions, like what kind of dog he is (I respond he's just a rescue mutt) how heavy he is (I respond a healthy 60) and then he has the audacity to tell me that Silas is MUCH too skinny and that for a head his size he should be at LEAST 100 pounds.
I smiled, all friendly like, and told him that the only way he should be anywhere near 100lbs was if he was half cow and we went on our way.

After that I stopped for a break by the veterans bar, and Silas took his place beside be on the bench. A group of older gentlemen came out of the bar, seen Silas and went absolutely crazy. They swarmed us...with complements and stories of the dogs of their day. It was so nice to talk to them, and they even got Si some water. They're expecting us to stop whenever we walk again

And then after our lovely experience with the vets, I had another gentleman tell me Silas is MUCH too small (height wise) and that his female is twice the size as him. I just did a friendly "Is that so?" while Silas mingled with his boxer.

So here are some photos from that walk. Does Silas look skinny to you? lol maybe I should fatten him up a bit (also, please ignore the position of Silas's prong collar. He's between links so when I let him get ahead of me for photo purposes, it slides down his neck)

And just for fun. He found the largest water bowl he's ever seen!

He's looking good . This is a thread that I'm hoping continues.
I'm not quite sure why people always feel the need to tell strangers what they think especially when it's about our dogs.

I think he looks great! A lot of people show before and after pics of a skinny shelter dog and a fat house pet. Its refreshing to see that the weight he is gaining is muscle. he's very lucky to have u!

Thank you both! I'm really proud of him.

Here are some photos and video from today!
I made a new flirt pole (first one was kind of shoddy) and tied his favorite stuffed animal to it...no go. Kora adored it though! She's got a very high prey drive...Silas does too but I'm finding that he doesn't like the pole above his head. He always ducks and flinches.
So I'm going to get one of those tug things you wrap around a tree or post. He does enjoy tug!

In this video, Silas mostly plays a cow and munches grass. But Kora had a good time.

And in this one, he mostly acts like a dingbat but does decide to participate...and then gets zoomies and runs around like a dork the rest of the time lol

And please ignore the state of my grass. I'm quite embarrassed by it. The guy we hire to mow it had his lawn mower crap out

Is anyone still interested in this? I'll post some pictures from today anyway.

Finally found something he enjoys doing other than walking. Chasing the water hose! Found this out while I was doing yard work and watering the flowers and he tore through them trying to get the water

Pink- Torque is one of the dogs to inspire us to work with Silas. He's so spectacular!

Thought I'd add just a fun clip of him and his hose.

LOL!!! I have a couple that are water hose freaks too! Our hose has lots of teeth pricks in it so every so often you get another stream spewing in another direction. I laughed out loud when I saw your! Does go after the lawnmower too?

PS you can also get endurance (for pulling and for muscle definition) if you slow trot them on a treadmill
