Ear cropping question

Hi!

So this is more of a reassurance for me than anything, but was hoping for some advice. I have owned pitbulls for 15 years, and never cropped. After multiple hematomas, painful drainage surgeries, and horrible ear infections - we decided our next baby would be cropped to see if this would help with ear issues.

Mystique was cropped 3 days ago (at 9 weeks, 2 days) and as you can see one ear tilts into her head while the other seems more erect. We asked for something in between a show and short crop. I have been creeping a few forums to see if this was common or if there was any way to resolve. The majority of what I have seen says posting the ears helps, but the vet said we wouldn't need to post to get them to stand because of the cut.
Is it too early to tell?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Looks fine. No worries! Once her stitches are ready to come out, you'll take her back to the vet. They'll remove her stitches, and then tape her ears. Have them show you what to do, in case her ears fall out of the tape. (It happens a lot!) If your vet is experienced, (Looks like it, based on her crop!) they'll have her ears standing properly in no time! Expect a little wonky-ness around 6 months, when she starts teething, but she should do just fine. Feel free to come back for more advice if you're worried.

I always thought people cropped ears for looks...but you are saying it you don't crop them, they have ear problems down the line? How/why? And how can it anyway you avoid ear problems without cropping?

I had decided not to crop ears or tail but now I am wondering if I should get her ears cropped?

It is not accurate. Cropping dose not help or hinder the health of a dogs ears. I can tell you that my cropped dog hates the rain more then my natural dog though. Because the rain drops fall directly into her ear. But she has a pretty short crop. That is the only difference between the two.

Got it...

Yeah I watched a vide of a lady saying the only reason she got her dog cropped was because she wanted to put him in shows and their ears need to be cropped in order to be in shows? Is that true?

I dont plan on putting her in shows...she is my pet, and companion, but what if she looks good enough to put in shows..I wouldn't want to hinder her by not getting it done...and it be too late...

Over all I think I will not crop them, I want her to not be afraid of going in the rain...

Another question I heard that pits get ear infections easily...and when you bathe them to put cotton balls in their ears...is that to say they can't swim? Or do you just make sure to dry them off afterwards and everything will be alright?

Thank you by the way..

Bull breeds in general tend to have a lot of allergies which can cause chronic ear infections.
Do you have her pedigree? What kennel club is she registered and as what breed? Cropping is really dependent on the judge that day, and also dependent on the breed. I believe Amstaffs are usually cropped for show. Indie would really be better at answer this questions as she shows her Amstaffs and is more familiar with the show world.

She is American Pitbull Terrior, UKC...and to be honest, I probably am not going to put her in shows, I have her more as a companion, and family dog...it could be fun to do...but my wife, son & I already compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments...that is enough competitions for our family haha..

And the rain scenario is enough to make me want to keep her ears how they are...either way I will take good care of her ears, when is a good age to start wiping their inner ears down?

I have UKC American Pit Bull Terriers, and they are all cropped. My bred-by pup, CeeCee, has natural ears, and has already Championed. There are some judges who prefer cropped, some who prefer un-cropped, and others who don't care either way. I know of a few dogs with full-prick ears that have granded. So, point being, only crop if you want a cropped dog.

BTW- google "snood" if you want to keep the rain out!

Whoa. Sorry Indie. I haven't read your show posts in a very long time. So I guess I forgot they were UKC APBT.

OMG! I may need one of these for Cheza! Her crop and build make her look pretty tough and one of those things would make her look like the teddy bear that she is. LOL!

LOL! Staff infection!
I'm seriously thinking Cheza needs one. She's not smart enough to come in out of the rain, but looks completely miserable and flinchy while she's out there.
