American Staff or APBT ?

Ok, so me and my mom are interested in these two breeds as are next dog. We have previously owned dogs before, and I have been researching for 5 years on both of these breeds to make sure what I was getting into when I get him.

So here's the problem, my mom can't decide whether or not we should get an American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. I have read in a ton of books and it says that AST's are more "family oriented dogs" and APBT's are more "atheletic and game". This doesn't mean APBT's aren't good family pets because I know they can be, but im trying to conclude which would be the better one, an athletic dog or a more family oriented dog. Now, aparently, my mom seems to be leaning more towards the American Staffordshire, I seem to be leaning more towards the American Pit Bull Terrier. I love both breeds, but it's hard to choose because they are alike in there own ways.

I would be home all day (because I go to school at home) and I would be able to walk the dog all throughout the day and be able to train the dog, so that wasn't really the issue. Im just trying to figure out, which one should I choose ? Again, I love both breeds, but I cant seem to choose.

Best advice is take your time, do more research, and see if you can get out to some shows and events and even to some rescues and do some hands on with the dogs. This may help you get a better idea of which would be better.

Other great sites to take a peek at are:
Encyclopedia of the American Pit Bull Terrier : HomePage
American Pit Bull Terrier Network Pit Bull Encyclopedia A to Z about the APBT

Both can be awesome family pets when properly bred and matched up with responsible owners.

Kudos to you and your mom for doing your homework

THE BIG DEBATE. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO BREEDS.

If you are just looking for a pet, to love and enjoy, I would suggest going with a rescue or shelter dog. There are a lot of purebred quality pits there. If looking for a pet, pick something with more of a layed back temperament, but not shy or fearful. Something on the smaller side.

If you have your heart set on a papered dog, look hard and careful, as there are way more dis-reputable people than there are good ones.

The amstaffs and pits can both be hyper, and dog agressive depending on the bloodlines, and parentage.
Many UKC dogs are amstaff crosses anyway, so you may be able to save a little money by going with what I all a UKC amstaff.

As a rule, the APBT is less expensive. There are also not as many people breeding the amstaffs, so it may be easier to find a good APBT. Also, it depends on the look you are searching for. True APBTs tend to have a leaner appearance, than the amstaffs or UKC show dogs. There are also some amstaff lines that tend to be more layed back. However, the ones I have, are not. LOL.

Where are you located, and exactly what are you looking for? I can give you some names of reputable breeders of both near you, hopefully.

eh they are pretty much the same although they are different breeds. i say the apbt has more energy from my own experiences, but the staffordshire terrier is basically the show version, and the apbt is the working version

it's more about personal preferences.
