Military Pit Bull?

Hi everyone!

We adopted Bravo back in August knowing that we would be in a military lifestyle. My boyfriend is in Air Force ROTC (looking to be a fighter pilot) and coming to the second semester of his second year. We have quite some time to figure out how it would work. We did some research way back before we adopted him because we've always wanted to have a pit bull. We know that there are regulations on base for Pit Bull and "other aggressive or potentially aggressive" looking breeds. We have planned for off-base housing and know that there is a risk with BSL rising in some states.

I'm wondering if anyone's been in a military setting with their pit bull.

How did people react to you?

Did base housing let you in? (We did plan to live off base with Bravo from the start. - we will do anything to keep him)

Did moving countries ever stop you from having your dog?

Did BSL in different states and countries prevent you from keeping your dog with you?

Another thing that may be of help is that Bravo and my other dog are both recommended by my doctors as Emotional Support Animals. Would that make any difference at all?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Saw an episode of pit boss and this poor family who lived on base had to give up their dog, she looked NOTHING like a pit bull. Ever since that, I kinda lost respect for the military. These men and women are fighting for our country, and already are away from their families and now bc of this law have their families torn apart. It's disgusting.

I know emotional support animals do not have the same rights as service dogs unfortunately. Best bet would be to live off base.

Military installations do not allow pitbull type dogs or aggressive breeds to live kn post however most installation vets will accept them for check ups. No matter what post housing will not let you stay in any gov housing. However in germany I lived off post and had a german shepherd with no issues and he came to the vet on post.
Unfortunately one of the downfalls of military life they control it all they can station him somewhere that has bsl and you could be out of luck happens quite often

It really all needs to stop. Think of how many dogs have to go into the shelter bc of this. They woulda and coulda had a loving family but the family has no choice. It's wrong. Now the dog has to die in a shelter? Vice versa too. So many dogs cannot be adopted bc of breed restrictions and BSL. If BSL and breed restrictions didn't exist, I bet that would help the shelter populations. It won't fix it completely, but it would definitely be a start

Yeah it does but its really not post commanders fault normally its the damn frg and (no offense to and stay at home dads or moms) stay at home spouses that complain about vicious looking dogs germany actually didn't have any issues til about a yr into me being there. Some lady got scared by a rottie and that lady happened to be a full birds wife.... needless to say about a month later no vicious breeds. Her "petition" was signed due to her wording..... The dog was ready to attack her bc it was sitting.... staring at her....

That's the messed up part, your spouse is away and your at home with the kids and then they come and take the dog away? That's a scary situation. I couldn't imagine going through that.

Yet the small dogs are really the attackers but it's so "cute & funny" when they do it....

Oh man. Thanks for all the stories!

I couldn't imagine someone coming into my home and taking Bravo away.. plus with his DA, I don't think it'll look good against all their little "angels." Sounds like it's off base housing for us!

I follow Dogs on Deployment on Facebook and I just saw a family moving to germany for 10 months who need a temporary boarder for their dog (who has a "big head") because they're afraid their dog will be taken away. Those are the times I'm really scared for. I'd be heart broken and I don't think that him being an ESA would justify anything in other countries. What do you all think?

Military won't see it as anything
Different it'll be a case by case basis but unless its a service dog no dice. Off base is where you'll wanna be and him just going in means you wanna be far away from on lost housing lol trust me random inspections (army) and crap gets annoyi ng
