keeping them together

My female just had pups on thursday 3-5-09. I want to keep one of the pups... should I keep a female or male. I have both parents here with me. Now I have heard 2 males together will fight and females won't but I have a friend who had to seperate his 2 females. Any suggestions????

Females can fight, Males can fight it all depends on the dog. If you for sure want to keep them together your out of luck. I just kept a female out of my litter and I know they will not be kept together. Never trust a pitbull not to fight. Hell I have had a male tear up a female before.

The fighting that can happen between the dogs comes with the territory. As far as the females won't fight-they say if you get another dog, its best to get one of the opposite sex. My opinion is that might help alittle bit, but it probably doesn't lower the chances that much. If their gonna fight, their gonna fight. The solution is supervision and prevention.

it depnds on the dog, it's just like winning the lottery, Shadow is very DA, but he tolerates Jinx and Skye ujt of course still seperate if I'm going out, you can never be sure. No matter what you choose just always keep an eye on the dogs and correct their behavior before it escaltes.

I am in agreeance that you can never trust them not to fight. My male is a very passive and laid back dog and has never shown any signs of aggression towards other dogs even when I take him to the local petsmart, but as stated above he is supervised by me and might be different if left alone. the mom is the biggest couch potatoe i have ever seen so she might be ok, but then back to the territory thing and I won't know if the pup i decide to keep will end up being the aggressor.

The moms parent live in a house with 2 of their offspring from her kitter and they all are ok together even when left alone in the house, no seperating. So I was thinking maybe it might be ok, but an ubsure and definately dont want any of them to get hurt.

thanks for the replies

I don't currently have issues with my dogs getting along besides Chaka not really caring for Sookie (I think she knows Sookie is a lil different from them lol) but she doesn't mess with her with me right there but since she has shown me she don't really like her I never let them out together. Just watch for signs and be mindful of what could happen...

BTW I've never had issues with my boys it's always my girls sigh... Had to rehome my first champion due to her being da toward other females (she tried to kill Chaka when she was ten months old so...)

well you can do what you want with the pups i mean keep one if you know you are prepared but ma i suggest getting your dogs fixed you do not sound like a professional breeder to me i do not know if this was a one time thing or if you plan on having more litters but there are more pits in the pound then any other breed each year due to over breeding one litter can make a huge difference this is why i say dont breed unless you are a reputable breeder.

Are you prepared to crate and rotate if the need be? Life with more than one dog is stressful, life with more than one APBT can be a hugh stresser. Do you do anything with your male? Are you perpared to spend twice as much time training another dog? I would answer these question before you decided if you want another pup.

MIKADO is right living with more then one can be stressfull especially if they have some tendancies of DA (dog agression) this would call for careful management. not only do you have to worry about how they will get along especially if you arent home but what about exercise i do not know about your dogs but for me and most people i know who have this breed one pitbulls energy level greatly overpowers ours and i am always doing some sort or exercise or activity wih onyx i can take himk for a three hour hike in 80 something degree weather come home he will be tired for about a half hour to an hour if i am lucky but then his energy will be restored. i hope your dogs dont have any people agression cuz that will be even more work.
