Littermates

Had a question about littermates and thought I would bring it up to you all. I always heard that if you get 2 puppies you never want to get them from the same litter. I have heard there are a bunch of different reasons but the main one people keep telling me is there will always be a " competition " type thing between the two of them. Not sure if this is true or not and never got a good answer about this subject so I thought I would ask.

I had also heard that it doesn't make a lick of difference. Seems like it is 50/50 on the answers of positive vs negative.

Thanks

We actually have a few people here with litter mates so you should get some good answers. I have never had anymore issues with litter mates than ones that where not. They actually seemed to get along better due to dealing with all thier issues and whos place is where when they were young.

I have heard littermates get along exceptionally well, but I don't have 1st hand experience. I think any pups who are just about the same age, and raised together will generally have a closer bond than other dogs whether siblings or not.

Hey, Coletrain.. how's it goin? Been a while since we chatted. Uh, in answer to your question.. the only truth I've experienced in having littermates as opposed to having two pups from different litters.... is no matter if they're littermates or not, there will always be some sort of competition, depending on their personalties.. you know, if you get two dominant personalities... but, if you wisely select a dominant, and a happy-go-lucky or easy going type personality, maybe even a submissive personality, you stand a better chance of not having so much competition issues. Does that make sense to you? It's pretty much the same thing as if you have an older dominant dog, and bring in a new pup that's got the same personality. I studied animal behavior in my vet tech course I did, and learned all about different personalities. Not sure where you might be able to find such info on the net, but maybe if you visit your local library, or can find a book at your local book store on animal behavior and personalities, you can read up and better understand it to further assist you. I hope I was able to answer your question, at least somewhat. Anyone else with other opinions or helpful info, please feel free to correct me or post what you know that I may have missed!! Good luck to ya Coletrain!

I agree having littermates is no different then getting two pups from different litters. Personalities, temperament, drives, dominance issues etc all are based on individual dogs and not whether or not they are littermates.

Properly raising and training to pups is a lot of work. They need training time both together and separately to make proper human bonds and be good dogs in the future and IMO that is more so the issue people have when getting pups together. I see so many that get 2 pups thinking, "oooo they will be friends and keep each other busy" ... then they do not put in the time to work with them and wonder why everything isn't perfect.

I have littermates . I don't mind it. I love everything about puppy training and take a lot of time working with them both as pups and adults .

I really wouldn't recommend most people get 2 pups together period unless you really have the time to put into the pups. It isn't fair to the dogs if you don't.

Hope that helps.

Sadie and Simba are litter mates and are extremely close ... They have always been stuck together like glue since the day I brought them home .. I have never had any issues at with them.

Appreciate the responses. I don't have any intentions on getting another puppy or two right now. Too much to handle with two of the four I have already. I was just curious is all. Since all my dogs are rescues I never had the chance to get 2 pups from the same litter before and it's just something that I have been told I shouldn't do many times so I thought I would ask for future reference.

Thanks again.

There were not ptbull but we ave had in my life two sets of litter mates. Majhall and Kion were rescue labx. Majhall was extremly agressive towards Kion. He would make Kion sit in a corner if left together. Kion was a very shy dog not sure what had hapened to him before we got him as they were left as puppies out on farm we got them when they were about 12 weeks old.

The other litter mates were also lab crosses. They were in best buddies. They wouldn't pay any attention to any one else they played ate and slept together. They were harder to train as they hated to apart. When at age 9 Jasper had cancer so bad we had to put him down we put Whichin down with him. It was hard to do but Whichin didn't eat for the 3 days we had Jasper at the vets. He would sit and howl and bark and cry. It was painfull to watch. So we sent them to rainbow bridge together.

Well I have Nevaeh who is Faith's half sister, same sire's different dams, but to be honest with you, Nevaeh despises Faith. She is only nice to her when I am around but when I am not around, I have to do the whole crate and rotate. I would think that littermates from the same litter would get along better than possible siblings from different litters. Nevaeh adores our other dogs, but sometimes I feel she is jealous of Faith, lol, and because Faith is so rambuntious and Nay Nay is more laid back that she doesn't like to be jumped all over on.

Charley plays regularly with her littermates and mother, only had a problem with one who is DA anyway. I think it boils down to whether or not a dog is socialized with other dogs. Same sex aggression or general dog aggression would trump any "competition", and I'm not sure that dogs even have a of sense competition like sibling rivalry.
