finding a rental that takes a pit bull mix

Does anyone rent to tenants who have an American pit bull mix dog. I haven't been able to find any in my area in Northern California. I've looked from Oakland to Livermore. Need to find a place. My daughter's two-yr old is staying with us & she's mixed with pit bull terrier & plot hound. I never realized how stereotypes of dogs could also affect people's lives. It's very prejudicial, they won't even consider meeting the dog first.

Welcome! I know right it SUCKS SO BAD. Keep looking it will take a long time and you may have to move out of the area you are comfortable with, but there is an apartment renting company in California who doesn't discriminate. http://einhorninsurance.com/californ...izona-montana/ Good luck, dont give up.

If you dont know what breed your dog is, I would call him a mutt. Can you get references for the dog? Training certificates? Have him go for the CGC test? Take out an insurance policy on your dog and show the potential landlord that you would assume liability because you pay to insure your dog it wouldn't go to their home owners insurance. that may help sway people in allowing. Look for private renters not management companies.

without knowing your exact area I dont know where to send you but have you looked at these? Pit bull friendly apartments San Francisco, CA

The first link said what I was trying to best:

A great way to be a responsible Pit Bull owner is to have a Renters Insurance policy that includes coverage for your Pit Bull. Renters isn’t mandatory with Stonesfair, but is highly recommended by Einhorn Insurance.

On average, Renters Insurance is about $20-$30/mo and is the best bang for your buck!

Renters insurance covers two main things:
Your Stuff (personal property) in the event it is damaged by a fire, a pipe bursts and floods your place, someone breaks into your home/car and steals your items…etc.
Liability or the unintentional or accidental actions caused by you and/or your pets that cause bodily injury to others. For example, you are pushing a shopping cart and accidentally bump into an older person causing them to fall down and break a hip OR your dog jumps on someone to say hello and they fall backwards and bump their head. Dog claims are not just about bites. If your Pit Bull accidentally knocks someone over, scares someone, their tail whips a child in the face, plays too rough with another dog…, these are all items that can result in a claim

A suggestion, get to a computer and find one of those sites that have you, "Pick the Pit bull" They are all a little different, but basically, they show several photos of pure bred dogs and then you have to pick what one is the Pit bull.

Print the images and the answers.

Find a vet who will write you a letter saying your dog is some other breed. Maybe even re license the dog, as the other breed.

I know it is "shiesty" and dishonest. But consider this, go to any shelter, do it online, or use like adopt a pet or something. So many of the dogs for adoption are called breeds that they do not even look any close to.

If you adopted your dog, chances are, it is not the breed you think. (wink)

Heck, print a few pages of dogs that are clearly not the breed the shelter is claiming.

Many places restrict based on size, instead of breed. But if you have enough money, a big deposit will get you into some places. You could also get renters insurance coverage for your dog and let the new landlord know you carry it. It's not very expensive.
