Ignorant people...really dislike them (rant)

Hi people. Apparently we (as pitbull owners) are all drug dealers and gangsters. HAHAHA

According to my 17 year old son, who get fed missled information by his uneducated mother, Pitbulls are associated with drug dealers and gang members. Tell me that doesn't make you LOL. it does me.

If this breed was as bad as a lot of people think a lot of pitbull owners wouldn't even own them. I'm a fairly new pitbull owner. I got my dog, Sulley in December as an early christmas gift. And before I did, I looked and looked for the right one. While I searched, I educated myself. I did my homework. That way when, becuase I knew I was going to have to defend the breed, I knew what I was talking about. Up until about 3 years ago I had never had an encounter with a pitbull. Then I dated a girl who had one and fell in love with her. As most people do. I decided then that I wanted a pit. I also told myself that when I got one, I would be the best pitbull owner I could possibly be. I would be an advocate as much as I could. I also told myself I would try and change the perception of the breed...even if I only changed one person's perception, I made a difference...might be a small difference, but it's something.

Then I get told this by my son. Who has had plenty of interaction with the breed. He was around the girlfriends dog a lot. And he was around Sulley when I first got him at three months old. His mother tells him that her boyfriends son had one who was tied up all the time and was mean. I wanted to tell her, HE'S MEAN BECAUSE HE WAS TIED UP ALL THE TIME! UGH!

Anyway....we all know what kind of fun, loving, affectionate, crazy, wild, clown kinda dogs we've all come to love. I get told every day by people I didn't even know had pitbulls, how great these dogs really are. So thank you for reading my little (long) rant.

p.s. Attached is Sulley along for a ride at about 6 mos old. He is now about 8 months old and about 60 pounds of love.

I agree that being a responsible owner is important, but I've got to say, most "advocates" spew as much bullshit as the haters do nowadays. First of all, the "It's how they were raised" speech. Yes, obviously if you train your dog to be HA, it'll be HA, but it's definitely NOT how they were raised in most cases.

DA is common and accepted. You can't prevent it or train it out no matter how much you socialize your dog. The switch might still flip at any point.

HA is usually either due to shitty genetics or just a mentally unstable dog. Both are also not preventable once they've started and my opinion is that those dogs should be euthed.

None of this included the way a dog was raised. So I think that being a good breed embassador is about being honest and accepting what your breed is capable of, then managing it and presenting it in the best possible way, not sugar coating it.

Anyways, there's my rant. Lol.

Totally agree with BCdogs well said.. Also having a dog tied up all the time isn't going to make them mean.

Yes they are a wonderful breed and they do get a bad reputation... But as stated above by a couple of other posters... some of your information can be just as harmful to the breed. I have a couple dogs that are kept on chains, they also get to come in and be with our family and they go on walks and get a lot of exercise. But their primary containment is a chain spot. They are far from mean, mistreated or abused.

I agree with you BCdogs. You can't help bad genetics and whether or not they are mentally unstable. And like you said they should be euth'd. It's a sad fact of life, but it would just keep spreading that bad gene if they were to reproduce. There's enough breeding going on as it is.

Anyway...thanks for your comments to my original post.

Conner is an unknown quantity at this point
Lol for some odd reason when I picture a white drug dealer he has a am bulldog or mastiff and when I picture a black drug dealer he has a rottweiler.(not knocking other breeds) But nice rant. Being from south Carolina I opened a history book a few weeks ago and I was amazed to see how many families had pitbulls back in the day. With the bad media attention now days on the breed it was just unreal seeing them in family photos and stuff. Lol. Pretty awesome though. I have to admit.
