BYB or Reputable Breeder?
What would you consider to be a "backyard breeder" compared to a reputable breeder besides the obvious like is not a registered breeder, or breeds for money? Would like to hear your comments. Thanks!

A BYB typically breeds only for money, without testing the dogs' health and temperment. They will breed dogs with no titles, only caring about about whatever the desirable money making trait of that breed is, in pits it's often blue dogs, but it happens to all dogs: rotties bred for unusual size, same with shepherds, toys bred to produce "teacup" sizes.
While reputable breeders can and do breed for traits they find desireable, they breed with with priorities that often come down to 1. Health, 2. Temperment, 3. Conformation or ability, depending on whether your kennel produces show dogs or working dogs (sometimes both) 4. Money (but most breeders only use money they make to put back into the dogs, and it is usually not a high profit margin for reputable breeders, in fact most are happy if they come out of a breeding with a next gen prospect, and enough money to pay the vet bills for the pups).
A BYB priorities look like this 1. Money, 2. Color (what color makes the most money) 3. Size (once again, which size can I charge the most for) 4. Getting "good" names on the peds (so the pups are worth more). Health and temperment do not even make their lists, and any undesireables, too small, wrong color etc, are often culled. You do not see BYBs staying up all night helping a runt hang on to a thread of life. Pups from BYBs rarely see an actual vet before you get them, they might have records, but anyone can buy the meds from the feed store. Most reputable breeders will have the pups checked by a vet in person at least once.
BYBs often have no restrictions on whether you can breed a pup you get from them. A reputable breeder will only sell a pup on spay neuter contract, or will co-own a working or show dog. They generally only sell a pup to be shown, worked or bred to someone they know personally, and will watch that dog grow and progress.
BYBs will often breed a bitch nearly to death, starting with her first cycle. Reputable breeders carefully choose their breedings, and if a bitch is bred more than once, there are always cycles in between.
While you will see BYBs advertising online and in papers, most reputable breeders have homes lined up for all pups before the breeding takes place, they have waiting lists, and many potential buyers are required to have rigorous screenings and home visits.
If you are a good home, and inquire to a reputable breeder and offer a fair price that covers their expenses but is lower than asking price, they may sell the pup to you at that low price because what you lack in resources, you make up in knowledge and care. A BYB will laugh at you and send you on your way.
