Leashes

So what is everyone's favorite leash? And where did you get and and how often do you use it?

I've been making mine so I have a couple of these kind here that I use for walks or shows...sometimes I use a nice 30-50ft leash so the dog can kind of run off and sniff a round...a little more freedom without being off leash but eh, they feel like they are off leash I just hate having to gather the leash all up and roll it together when we are done... I use these obviously ony in areas where there aren't really other dogs around or when I'm at lakes.

I'm interested to hearing about what everyone else uses... Also do you walk your dog with a harness or collar? Which do you prefer and why? Sorry if this is a boring thread....just thought I'd start some conversation...

wow, coach you must be rich.......

i looked into purchasing one of those crimpers,
yikes!!!!!!!

if i remember, it was over $100,
so now mine look like yours only i have knots,

but i have a 20'er also,
like to let them roam, but still in control,

so many think, just because you have a good lookin dog,
they will let theirs run right up, and start playing the fool.

thats when i get out of there,
dont want any accidents.

but i do love just being with mine.
BONDING.......

We just use your typical clip-on nylon leashes for walks. We stick to trails for the most part where there aren't any other dogs around.

Sometimes we use the 50ft braided rope for Squirt to get a little taste of freedom but I'm finding that it's a little dangerous both for my hands and for him getting wrapped up in it.

I use a half-chain martingale on Squirt for walks that I expect him to heel on, otherwise we use a harness and he's allowed to pull to his heart's content. Piggy just gets a normal flat collar, she doesn't pull whether we allow it or not.

i use basically the same set up with rescue (rappel) rope and bull snap. i also like the integrated traffic handle. and heat shrink tubing over the hardware.
i've ordered most of my equipment from Ella's Lead.

I made my long leads with boat rope, but I used knots instead of those fancy things (that look very nice by the way). I use a 4ft double ply nylon leash for each of mine on every day walks. Deuce walks with a 1.5" nylon slip collar now, and Gem has a 2" nylon slip collar. If we are somewhere I feel needs extra control I will add a harness along with the collar, connecting one end of the 4 ft leash to the collar and the other end of the leash to the harness. I hold onto the middle of the leash like a handle and it works just great I only use the long leads if we are in a big field or camping/hiking without other people with dogs.

Lol you guys those heavy rope clamps are at Tractor Supply and you just need a hard core hammer to hammer them down. At Tractor Supply they have the cheap ones too so be careful you don't get those

I got a 50 foot leash with a handle at the bottom and top. It's great but I don't take him out much with it. I use it for flirt pole in the park an stuff. I have a bungee leash which I like a lot when we are hiking and when I ride the bike with him, less jerking. If one of is loses our balance there is no yanking. I also have one the goes around the waist. It's not long enough so I don't use it often. This is my regular leash. Name: ImageUploadedByPetGuide1406158807.511019.jpg

Nina'sMom is an unknown quantity at this point
Right now for our neighborhood walks, Nina wears a step-in harness because her throat is too sensitive and prone to heavy rasping since she had kennel cough as an older pup. I still hook up to her collar sometimes, but it offers nowhere near the same control has the step-in harness because the clasp for the harness is right above her shoulders and lets me turn and guide her body as needed. We also use a temporary slip rope leash with a heavy-duty carabiner (from an exercise machine), until I can get a better rope leash from either Stillwater or Ella's Lead.

When we go on longer walks for exercise, she wears a regular Roman/H-style harness with a 20 foot cotton long lead so she can roam the trail and botanical garden and pull to get a workout as she likes.

My long line is a piece of parachute cord I had laying around with a carabiner at one end to attach to the dog and a knotted loop at the other to hang onto.

I love the bungee leash for hiking. Mine has the regular handle at the end which I thread through the waist strap of my pack, and I added another handle (more parachute cord) about half way down in case I need more control on the leash. (Usually when the dog sees a critter she could get.) I need to get a second one. There are times on the trail when I need my hands free, and this way the dog is still attached to me.

For regular walking, I have plain 6' nylon leashes from the pet store.

My 2 year old just uses the leash hooked to her regular collar. She still tries to get away with stuff when on leash, but she's easy to correct. The pup uses a martingale collar right now.
