Feeling overwhelemed after adopting my PitBull

I adopted a 1 year old male pitbull from our local animal shelter last month. On Halloween. I've always had such a soft spot for the breed and he is my first one. His name is Bert. He is super sweet and loves my 3 year old hound mix Izzy. She's pretty happy with him but let's him know when she's had enough of his roughhousing. Typical sibling behavior I guess.

We've really had no big problems with Bert. He loves to lick your face and sniff you all over and he tried to steal my Mom's glasses off her face. Scared me a little! He's is tough to walk on a leash and does jump on people when they come over. We've been working on those behaviors so I'm sure he be a well mannered young boy soon.

I guess I am struggling a little with the emotional side of things. Thinking my other dog Izzy is mad at me or jealous, even tho they seems so happy when they are snuggling or playing. I do feel a little hurt by people's comments of me being crazy to adopt a pitbull. "He's gonna turn or snap or bite someday." I feel confident in my decision, but their comments do stress me out and then start to make me worried.

Maybe this is just the normal adjustment period after adopting a new furry family member. I need to just relax and enjoy my new boy. I'm sure in a few months I'll feel comfortable.

Anyone ever feel this way?

Thanks for reading my rambling post!

He sounds like he just needs some training. Jumping on people is pretty common and it's usually easy to fix, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Just make sure you don't slack on teaching him manners.

Your older dog's reaction is also pretty normal. I would just supervise them. She might warm up to him, or she might not. It's kinda up to her. Not all dogs want dog friends.

As for the comments. I hate to say this, but they aren't gonna stop. You'll get used to it and you might even change a few people's minds, but there will always be a handful of people who you can't convince.

My family was once very anti bully breed, but I managed to change most of their minds. Heck, I even convinced by dad to come to an ADBA show with me a few years ago. He ended up loving it and is now a pretty big fan of the breed.

You will always face people who have a negative image of the breed and mixes of the breeds that are similar. Mainly due to lack of education, but also these dogs are just not for everyone so some people can't understand how a dog that would never work for them can work for you.

Just mind your own and enjoy your own pets, people words are just that. Words.

Exactly. This is a tough breed dog with a terrible reputation to get out from under. You need to be just as tough with his training and needs for exercise and even tougher when it comes to the comments that people will make about you as an owner and Bert. Great advice above. You'll be fine.

I agree with this completely. When I first got Zik, it was hard but I got through it.

ItsJustMe is an unknown quantity at this point
Wow, your Bert looks like my Zeus. He is 11 months and VERY ACTIVE! We are walking him, playing Frisbee, teaching him commands and just tiring him out and it seems to be working. We are also slowly interacting him with our older 9 year old rescue dog. We have a lot to learn....so glad I found this site.
