Ear cropping

Hi everyone! Tomorrow is the day Diesel gets his ears cropped. I'm a little nervous, I guess in a good way but also because this is my first crop lol but I just want them to be perfect with no complications. I do love his vet we chose, she's very thorough and very informative and loves to awnser questions and makes sure you understand everything. She makes you feel at ease and he's in good hands. She takes pride in her work and loves the dogs she works with. She has been doing ear crops for about 30 years now. We spent months looking for the right vet and seeing their previous work on crops and immediately settled with her. We had his consultation Monday and showed her the pictures and style we wanted and she checked out his ears. I hope she remembers everything! 😁 But I'm just curious, anyone who has had this done before, can you give some aftercare tips of what you did, what helped and how to keep him from scratching at the ears. I'm going to follow vets orders Ofcourse, but just could use the extra support in the healing process. I know once it starts to scab up he will be needing some kind of cream to not itch and the inflammation down. And how did your dogs act the first week? I know he will be very sleepy the first day and not active. But should he just about be himself again soon? Thanks everyone 😊

Welcome! You can't post the ears until the stitches are out, but you can use moleskin to keep them more upright, so they're easier to get standing later. My girl was back to her old self the day after the crop, and there wasn't any noticeable pain. You will need either an inflatable collar, or an Elizabethan collar to keep him from scratching.

There is always the risk of complications; I just had a friend have her two show pups cropped, and both came out horrendously. Then there are the pups that don't make it through the surgery due to a hidden defect.

I can't wait to see your pup's new haircut! Be sure to post some pictures of the healing process!

Thank you for the replies! He is doing wonderful after his cropping. He is his active playful self and is eating just fine. His ears came out amazing, I'm so pleased.
The tips of his ears are curled in though, the vet didn't wrap them after the surgery, she said she never had to wrap or post ears even on long crops for pits, bullies. She showed us healed pictures of her past work on pits and they're so nice, but I'm just concerned about it being a week and no change in the ears other than them healing up. She also said they will stand on their own, and worst case scenario we will post them. All my research has told me they're supposed to be wrapped atleast, and maybe posted. It's been a confusing and stressful week having to see them so bent inward on themselves. I will post pictures of the day of the crop, a few days after and today's now

Moleskin huh? That's a new one! I'd sure like some insight of how to use that on the ears to stand them. I hope everything goes great for your pups crop!
